Yes, I can confirm it does solve the smoking out of the tail pipe issue in steep incline. I'm not going to lie or attempt to pretend I know why, because I don't. However, after installing the JLT catch can, I no longer have this issue

I’m going to resurrect this thread. Apologies in advance. Figured it was better than starting a new one.

We live of off a BLM road in southern Utah. We usually approach our property from the southwest. Today we were at Lake Powell and decided go a different route....hitting a different BLM road that eventually intersects ours to the east of our property.

We were in two cars, my wife in her 2018 4runner and me in the Tacoma.

There is damaged section of the road, the go around being a steep fairly long climb up the side of a small hill. My wife was nervous due to the lack of visibility so my adult son drove and was able to get up the hill without an issue in the t4r.

I followed in the Tacoma. Within 2 minutes and about 50’ from the top white smoke began pouring out of the tailpipe and it started pinging. I was close to the top so I finished the climb and got the truck on level ground. Truck was idling rough and the smoke turned blue...then gradually cleared. I killed it and told my wife and son to go ahead and come back with my tools.

During the hour it took my son to come back, I started the truck up again and it ran fine.

Fluid levels checked out so I drove it home. Pulled the rear plug on the right side and it was coated in oil.

Thanks....I’ll give it a try and report back.

I seem to remember Warfab(?) saying that further down the road there’s a possibility of catastrophic engine damage....maybe I’m remembering it wrong....I’ll look the thread up.

I had mine do this once. Only time it ever did it was within 10 minutes of pulling it off the lot from signing papers. Chalked it up to assembly oils etc being burned off. I'll have to keep my eyes on it

Went back out early this morning after jogging with the dogs (in the cruiser). Slope measures 22 degrees at its steepest. First leg is 18.....last section is 20.

I’m going back thru the entire thread so pardon me if there is an answer - but has the catch can been proven to stop this?

So I ran the hill four times...twice in the 80 and twice in the T4R. The second run in each truck I sat at the steepest part and let them idle for about 4 minutes. No smoke, no pinging, no rough idle. The 4.5 and 4.0 don’t do it.

I ordered the JLT today. I’ll run the hill in the taco after I install it and see if fixes the problem.

Thanks, that's what I figured. I'm running into the same issue ordering a Fuel Cell for my off-road car right now. Looks like I'll be making a trip to Arizona to pick-up some packages in the next month.

Skiploader, I will be interested to see if the catch can fixes your issue. I think it sounds like a pretty effective bandaid. Toyota kind of dropped the ball on this one. Probably emptying it out after each trip where you find yourself off of level ground will be good enough.

I just moved out to Colorado, just got back from Moab yesterday. I'm pretty sure this mod will be in my future.

Has anyone who installed this catch can (being reccomended in this thread) still had this issue?

Im curious to how much oil is being dumped into the intake during these "events".

How much oil are you dumping out after each wheeling trip? Is it a consistent amount or does it vary? What is the range?

Here is the valve cover... the placement of the breather is certainly less than ideal. It also appears (?) to have a drinking straw in place to help the PVC system with oil ingestion... LOL! I definitely need to get my hands on one for inspection.
