V4 hybrid turbo. Sign me up. Ford seems to have a pretty good v4 turbo. Tows more than the Tacoma v6. Porsche Cayenne has a v6 hybrid tows way more.
Add in plug in hybrid, better gas mileage, faster. Plug it in at home but gas station on road or off road.
I’m in. Sold. Any color but neon yellow.

But I heard they are going back to drums on all 4, better for off-road.

Those are inline 4 bangers, not v shaped:)

There are very few v4s made.

I just hope the reliability in whatever they come out with is the Toyota reliability we expect. Some of the newer Fords have plastic oil pans, drain plugs and timing covers. Drop the drain plug and the wings that hold it in place snap off. The way it goes in reminds me of a child proof medicine cap. Complete garbage. Not sure if they offer a metal replacement like the oil filter cap I got for my Tacoma on the first oil change but if they do, I haven't seen it. I realize everything is going to plastic but damn, what's next? Plastic blocks?

    Check build thread!
My dad's 2021 Sierra 1500 can get almost 40 mpg if you drive with eggs under the pedals. Towing 5k lbs it still manages 25mpg. As for the trouble of the modern diesels, I have free lifetime regular services at my dealer, and diesel is way cheaper than gas rn in Ontario.

Old Saab Mechanic? That V4 was supplied by Ford Germany. The 1960s Tannaus reminds me of a Volvo more than a Ford.

I grew up with 2TCs & 20Rs. Way too old.

One of the prototype hybrids I drove in Germany had a 50 hp diesel with an 80 hp electric. Electric has a small battery, so our prototype could handle about 1-minute full power (think accelerating onto the Autobahn). Integrated Starter Alternator Dampner (ISAD) You flip a switch, and the diesel clatter was dead quiet with a very smooth engine.

I had fun pulling alongside a BMW and taking off like a rabbit. The BMW driver was started, rolled down his window at the next light (we left the diesel hiding), and just had this look of confusion. Normally, you kill the engine at the light, so in went the clutch. Engine dies. Let the clutch out at you were at 800 rpm in less than a second, hit the throttle, and off you go!

With modern electronics, you can have near full torque at 0 rpm. So pulling out of a mud pit, climbing over a 6x6 wooden board, do it. The only production vehicle that has idled over my old 6x6 is my Tacoma in crawl mode. The ABS pump is noisy as hell, but hybrids make a ton of sense for production vehicles. It's a trade-off as you carry more weight but have the acceleration and torque of a much larger motor with the long-distance range of gas. Curious to see what Toyota comes up with.

It will be interesting to see what Toyota has for the next generation.

2022 will be here in Sept but rare as hens teeth. MSRP is going up again and just the starting price as most dealers will want thousands more if you want to drive off the lot in one. Expect this to continue till more chips become available sometime in 2023.

I dont like the Ranger but I think they should have just put the 2.7L in there. That much power in a mid size truck would definitely have attracted attention and stole some sales from competitors.

I was surprised that my 2007 4.0 4x4 ranger had more payload than my 18 taco.

The Tacoma seem to handle heavy loads better though.

I agree. 2.3 is already quite fast. But with 300hp output, don’t think the little guy will last very long.
