Then again, with 2 parachute problems maybe he isn't so crackpot after all. Maybe the lizard people sabotaged his rocket to keep him from discovering the truth. The earth is really a donut orbiting the great spaghetti monster in the sky.

Uhhhh....orbital mechanics preclude the old "drop them into the sun" fix. The energy required to "drop something into the sun" is orders of magnitude higher than getting into LEO.

BTW....if this is the sort of thing that interests you, there is a FANTASTIC edX course through MIT called "Aeronautics and Introduction to Human Space Flight". They keep the math reasonable...if I recall correctly it's algebra only. It's taught by Jeffrey Hoffman who flew 5 times on the space shuttle. I couldn't recommend it any higher. I think you can even take it for free if you aren't taking it for credit.

The problem is the alternative. A lot of the satellites in orbit contain things that won't break up on reentry or contain potentially dangerous sources of energy such as nuclear materials or rocket fuel. Those will preclude them from landing as cargo shifting could destroy the whole vehicle while landing.

No...you don't understand me. I'm saying dropping them into the sun is essentially impossible due to the orbital mechanics involved. It is not an alternative. You would literally have to dock a booster to each satellite many times larger than the rocket that launched it to put it into a Sol impacting orbit.

The only place any satellite placed into orbit ever ends up is back on earth or in a high parking orbit above any drag effects from the atmosphere. There are no other options.

Yeah, it sucks, but with the amount of construction going on right now, it would probably add several days if not weeks just to get a single hop. Look at the bright side though. At this rate, by the end of the year they could very well be doing weekly launches. Maybe even more depending on if they get one of the oil platforms setup, and how much leeway that gives them with the FAA.

If the crazy idea of Starship making trips around the world weekend affairs, I wonder how that is going to affect all the world's missile detection systems. Since the only difference between a rocket and a missile is the payload, I think a lot of countries will be nervous about it. Might even prevent it from happening all together, which really sucks because he was talking prices comparable to a first class airplane ticket. I'd gladly pay much more than that for a rocket ride to space. Maybe we'll at least get coast to coast.

You would think they would be broadcasting IFF signals that show they're friendly. Plus, SpaceX is world news, so any first world country, with nukes, will know what's going on.

I was thinking about that when I read this:
    https://twitter.com/united/status/1400407090192125952?s=21

I’m thinking it’ll be obsolete well before that date if Starship point to point comes on line and is successful.

I doubt it. I think that it will still be way cheaper than Starship as well as having a far larger audience that is willing to get on an airplane versus a relatively new and unproven mode of rocket transportation. Especially so when you consider that 4.5 billion passengers fly yearly compared to just 553 people who have ever ridden a rocket to space. That's not even acknowledging the complete lack of infrastructure, regulations and actual Starships that would need to appear in the next eight years.

    Love that boost back burn!

If you didn’t get a chance to see it live, check out the launch and recovery. You can get a glimpse of the BB burn from the 2nd stage and the booster’s stream is amazing throughout!

    :hattip: @gsubioguy !

Add to my above post- the second stage/Dragon separation is pretty neat too
