Fair enough.
Just spitballing, but if you were able to get the hardware/ software working as described in your OP, you would more than likely need to play with some tables in vF tuner to get the results you want.
Hell, the annoyances you mention are the reason most, if not all of us ended up tuning our trucks anyway.

 

100% agree with this. OP, the MT trucks are a dream to drive but you'll have to work for it and uncover what Toyota did a good job of hiding. there is a lot of soft, weak, and weird parts (control arm attachment blades, the OE clutch and pedal assembly, the accumulator, and of course the software, etc.) that can all be handled with a smart mod plan and your truck will blow your mind with how well it drives in any condition from slow trails to 90+.

it's all available to you, but for confidence you'd want to spend time looking around at successes & failures, ask questions, etc... it's one of the best aspects of this forum. folks here can help you not make a mistake if you are ever ready to dig in. it's the best thing I've done, there's just nothing more fun than driving my truck anywhere.

MTs have it too. But IMO it defeats the whole purpose of driving a manual. To each their own.

 

So my original post is on the upward end of what I’m even capable of doing (I’m kind of an idiot ) and now I’m really just BULL$#!Ting...but what if I got the wire harnesses set up and just collected raw data for a while of normal driving, then took a stab at feeding it into a shallow neural net with all the applicable inputs and just seeing what the hell that does? I mean, we’re essentially dealing with a black box I/O here, so maybe the solution is to “fight fire with fire” so-to-say.

My brother is fairly well-versed in this kind of stuff and has dabbled in it using python.

 

My cable throttle ranger was a dream to rev match, perfect 99% of the time. Tacoma, about 70-80% of the time.

 

You can gather all of the raw data with existing OBD adapters to a very granular level. OBD Fusion and vF Tuner. A vF log is attached.

The problem is that your changes with your proposed device can lead to two things:

-- A potential warranty repair could be denied, similar to the vF Tune or ADM that you don't want to do.

-- If it is not programmed and integrated well, say by giving it active throttle control, it could lead to an unsafe condition potentially causing a collision. Unintended acceleration.​

 

I absolutely couldn’t stand the auto rev match in my old 6MT ‘16 M2. I specifically bought a Bluetooth obd2 dongle and BimmerCode to turn it off.

If you don’t want to rev match on downshifts yourself I don’t understand why you’d buy a vehicle with a manual transmission.

 

Glad I'm not the only one that can't rev match this truck. Sometimes I think I just can't drive stick for shit. Takes me two stabs of the pedal most times and even then barely wants to spin the engine.

Ha! You don’t have to be pro race car driver at all to do a rev match. Couple hours of practicing and you can be a pro. Now heel toe is a different story.

It’s way easier on a cable throttle vehicle though.

 

I feel your pain. That’s how I felt when my truck was bone stock. After a couple of mods, still not perfect of course but way better.

When you do get that perfect rev match in a tacoma, what a great feeling haha!

 

Now that I’m thinking about it, if the Tacoma came with auto rev match and there was no way of turning off, I would’ve been driving a frontier pro4x.

 

I almost did. They're a bit cheaper but WAY harder to find. And the resale not nearly as good. Still just made sense for me to go Taco. It was the more desirable truck anyway.

 

Definitely. Tacoma was my first choice and something I wanted for years.

Frontiers pro4x are pretty easy to find over here. That 4.0 makes 281 torque at 4K, which is pretty cool.

 

Toyota uses iMT on the Hilux with the RC transmission.

 

Looks like the Hiace with 7GR-FKS and RC60 has iMT with the optional premium package.

Wow OP.....you need to double clutch for a downshift......

I've owned multiple manual gearboxes, none needed to double clutch downshift. Shoot, even my ancient '81 Honda motorcycle doesn't need the double pump to down shift......

Suggest you spend less $$$ and invest in learning proper shift techniques. As your GF.....spend time with her teaching shifting AFTER you learn how.

 

I feel like the effort is wasted here, but I am of the opinion that it is a truck and one should expect it to drive as such. That being said, if you want a challenging project, go for it....

The one thing you will have to figure out, is how to tell your microcontroller what gear you are shifting to before letting out the clutch. Obviously that has to be nearly instantaneous. The ECM does not know or care, aside from after you have fully released the clutch so you won't be able to get that over the CAN bus(OBD). I would imagine you could figure out some kind of prox. or microswitch solution mounted to the shifter somewhere, but there isn't much room to work with. I am not sure how you would do it without modifying stock components.

 

Find a 2019+ Hiace Premium pack/iMT with the 7GR FKS, the ECU has what you need.

Toyota uses throttle info, clutch switch, and a speed sensor on the side of the transmission. The port in the RC trans is there/cast on our trucks, but needs to be drilled out.

I'll take rev match over the horrid rev hang.
