I don’t know dude .... it is parked outside but the spot is mostly shaded. Also identical Ford and Honda vehicles with similar dark color have zero issues in the same spot for 6 years so far. Also , I had pictures from the first year and it was already starting on the roof. Used machine car wash once in the 2 years and hand wash with water and mild car detergent after that. I mean .... even if you parked a brand new car in Death Valley all day , you’d start to see fade maybe at year 5 .
The pictures there are nothing compared to what it turned into in the last 2 months . Chips or paint were flaking off the hood down to primer . It was like no vehicle I had even seen lol. I mean brand new truck after two years ?
Anyway Toyota claimed factory defect with base coat and clear coat application . The body shop used the paint gauge and it was 1/2 of factory spec thickness (3.5mm I think or 0.35. What ever units they used )

You never know if the fallout contamination is bad in your area but 2 years is bad. If you value the paint on your truck you might have to invest in your time and polish it regularly. As a painter I can say Toyota paint systems (Mainly Clearcoat) is terrible. I have a 2016 in Black, live in Hawaii and my ride still shines like new even kept outdoors 24/7. Do I slave on it? Damm Skippy! Good Luck with your new paint job. $.02

These bad paint jobs remind me of the cars from the late 80s early 90s when car companies switched to water based paints. Crappy Ford GM and Chryslers with flaking paint and peeling clearcoat. Toyota makes awesome drivetrains but you would think they could properly paint vehicles by now.... especially for what they cost.

Yes, so after becoming our own "lawyer" we did indeed bring this fact up to Toyota corporate (after they declined many times to fix the issue). It states in the paperwork we got upon purchase that the paint warranty falls in that 60 month range . It is written more as "corrosion" though. Also logic would say the bumper to bumper should fall under 3 years not 36,000miles (which came first) for paint. We were at 2 year and ~40k miles. Their stance after "investigating" was solar convergence lol (the sun) was the cause. We had reports and statements from certified Toyota collision centers that this was obviously a factory defect based off film thickness measurements they made. Everyone could see this was clearly not normal and even with direct sun light 1-2 years (when the fade and flake started) was way too soon. The dealer even suggested the installation of the CBI bumpers could have caused it because "grinning was required" (for the rear bedsides) and that heat from the angle grinder could have done it. That statements was so insulting and absurd I asked if that was their stance and after 1 second of thought they quickly retracted that.

Anyways they fixed it. Hey anyone wanna buy a 2018 Tacoma ? If I can get 34-37k for this overhyped basic ass pickup truck I'd sell it in a heartbeat for that ugly cyber truck. I mean, stainless steal might last a bit longer?

EPA restrictions have brought the quality of paint finishing down from days of long past. Company's do not want to spend Millions on an expensive Hazardous waste program so we're left with a satisfactory finish. The paints systems are still good, just not great.$.02

2015 MGM here in SoCal and my roof looks like shit after only owning it for 2 years (90k total miles) :(. Going to do my best to bug Toyota.

For dinner reason, my roof really started fading as soon as covid started, and got pretty bad in a hurry! The hood had 2 small spots that are starting to fade too.

I take care of the truck and washed and waxed regularly.

This is how my 07 tundra looked after 13 years. Clear coat failure started after around 9-10 yr mark (roof was first to go). Was parked outside every day in so cal, washed and waxed atleast once a month. Picture is dark due to smoke cover from wildfires. Hope my taco doesn't share the same fate .

Glad toyota finally covered it for you. Should definitely not be happening within the first few years.

Having paint issues on the hood roof and other spots it’s cracking and popping Have a appointment with the dealer later in July . When I bought the truck in 18 I bought the simoniz paint lifetime warranty since I knew Toyota paint had problems so I’m hoping that covers to paint the whole truck.

Looks like I have the beginning of the same issue. 2016 MGM. Dealership quoted me $3K to repaint the roof. I asked if this was normal for a 5-year-old truck. He said "no" and I can open a claim with Toyota but it's not covered under any warranty or the recalls. I'm going to start this process. I'm open to tips or ideas that will help me get this covered. Thanks @2000prerunner23 and everybody else.
