    Hi all,

Recently purchased a new to me 2018 TRD Off Road and I’m having issues with the drivers side low beam only not turning on. Passenger side works as it should.

The drivers side high beams, turn signals, and DRLs are working properly. The PO of my truck had an H11 HID kit installed in the low beams, so my first thought was a burned out bulb. Tried the passenger side bulb in the drivers side housing, no dice. Second thought was a bad ballast, so I swapped the PS ballast to the DS with the PS bulb as well, still no dice. An entirely new HID kit also did nothing in the DS low beam.

Next I checked all relevant fuses, all visually good. I don’t have a volt/multimeter so unfortunately I’m unable to test the fuse locations and/or H11 headlight connector themselves.

I tried searching the forum and internet extensively and could only find a couple posts with this type of issue (only one low beam non-op vs both low beams out simultaneously) and their resolution was always a bad/missing fuse. Does anyone have any thoughts before I break down and take the truck into a shop?

Get new fuses and swap. Then test the light. If it fails you'll have spare fuses.

The best (and simplest) way to solve your problem is going to be to remove the aftermarket HID's and go back to stock. If you want to try chasing the problem through the rats next of aftermarket wiring, make sure you have plenty of time and cold beer.

I can’t say I understand it, but you were 100% correct!

Put a set of halogen Sylvania H11s in this morning and both headlights work perfectly fine again. I guess these Tacomas really don’t like HIDs...

Glad it worked! The problem is not so much that the trucks don't like HIDs as much as it is poor quality wiring and components in most HID kits.
