I think it's a given that automated vehicles in an unconstrained environment will encounter Trolley Problem type scenarios. What's the decision tree look like between taking the impact from an errant truck coming head on in your lane vs swerving onto the sidewalk with a couple pedestrians? What sort of lawsuits would we see in the aftermath of such a scenario?

Automation is just another aspect of how progress and technology have continued to change the workforce for hundreds of years.

How many farriers or livery stables or buggy makers do we see today?

 

Well, I grew up in Lancaster County PA, so a shit ton. Like passing buggies daily on the backroads from my house.

That's a bit of an anachronistic anomaly of course - but it provides a good contrast to what we see outside of Amish country. Ride that buggy over to Harrisburg and find a hotel that has facilities to care for the horses...

 

ALL of our stores and gas stations have stalls for and tie downs for horses. Boy I do feel bad for those horses, they're nothing more than a living machine to a lot of them.

I imagine that's the case right where you are - get a ways out and of course it's rather different. I've been up and down I81 (and US220/US15) far more times than I care to think about.
