What size spare for 17in wheels

Switching from 16 to 17in soon. Need for a spare just hit me. What size do you ride around with?

I switched from 16 to 17 inch tires some time ago and kept my 16 inch full size spare as my spare. I figure if I have a flat I'll only need it long enough till I get my main tire fixed.

 

2wd doesn't care if they're all the same or not, 4wd does.

 

IF you want to be diameter correct (and close is really good enough) just use the tire calculator, and get the correct tire for your existing spare wheel.

Width doesn't matter if this is just a 'get me home' thing.

However, if you are deep off road needing max traction at all times, you'll want to get a wheel tire combo of the same spec you have on the ground. (most folks don't really need that)

 

Another point of clarification and to reiterate Bill’s point.

I bought a 2021 OR that came with 16” wheels and spare. I have the original wheels in my garage.

I am running 17” SCS wheels now, but the 16” spare is still underneath the bed.

The 16” spare tire size is 265/70/16. The 17” tire size I have on my SCS wheels are 265/65/17. So the diameter for both is 30.6”.

But AWD vehicles have centre diffs so it wouldn’t care, no?

 

AWD cares. Open diffs don't.

 

Im trying to understand this.

So the centre diff in the AWD makes up for the speed differences in front and rear driveshafts, why would it be an issue?

I do still have a stock size spare actually, I’m running 265/70/17 on the rest of the tires. Would that be an issue in 4x4?

 

awd like Subarus use viscous or slip clutches to fudge the difference in wheel speed. It’s meant to handle the temporary difference from going around a corner. Running it with different size tires side to side or front to back means it’s always slipping and ends up burning out diffs.

That’s why you have to buy 4 matching when you wreck a tire..

 

tire diameter matters, not the wheel size.

265-70R16 is the same as 265-65R17
Both are the same diameter as the SR5 245/75R16

All works as spares for any size.
