I’m looking at buying a trd sport, but I know they are typically just 2wd. Are they easier conversions to make 4x4? Seeing as so many of the parts between the trucks are the exact same despite the difference in models?

The TRD sport is available in both 2wd and 4wd (I'd guess that most are 4wd but haven't pulled up the production numbers to confirm).

If you want a 4wd then buy one. You'll spend more on the conversion than you would just getting what you want in the first place.

    I’d look for a 2009+ TRD Sport 4x4.
The exception being the 2012 model. As some of them had an issue with SAIS.
This was fixed with the 2013+ trucks. The Pre-2012 didn’t have the SAIS system.
Avoid 2005-2006 models if possible, for possible head gasket issues.
2005-2008 trucks likely have the mechanical LSD. They can be hard to find parts for if you ever need to rebuild the Diff.

IMO, the 2013-2015 trucks are probably the best years.
And those are going for a premium right now.
Well, even more of a premium than the other years.
All trucks are outrageously priced in this current market.

    Good luck
Let us know if you find one.

The market for used Tacoma’s is definitely outrageous

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
It’s a mixed bag when it comes to 2WD and 4x4. And when it comes to the conversion I did mine for less than 2500 dlls. We have a couple of threads for the conversion process

Time is money too. In my opinion, the conversion only makes sense if you already own a prerunner with known history. No way I'd buy a used prerunner with the intention of converting it to 4wd.

Facts. everybody is different, total time for me to convert the truck in my garage by myself was about 3 days. Got the truck as a 2nd owner w/ 106k. And all the parts I used for the conversion were below 60k mi. And for what I paid I’ll do it all over again with a smile in my face, plus not having to deal with the ADD or the TCA it’s a big win in my book. Prices now a day for 2nd gen. 4x4 Tacoma’s are beyond sane comprehension. Cheers.

IMO if you are looking in CA you might just have to settle for some combo of things you want. I originally wanted an AC and 2WD but couldn't find any with good mileage/no accidents/clean title/etc. Ended up with a 15 Sport DCSB 4x4 with pretty low miles(26k) but it had only one owner and also I needed the truck so I just got what I could find within reason. I do still wish I had an AC sometimes though, or maybe a DCLB but that's just too long for LA lol, really need that extra bed space.

if you're currently looking... go w/ the 4x4. i didn't think i'd want it. i bought a 2wd. then i realized after having my first truck i really wish i had 4wd for occasional snow trips or deep sand. maybe eventually i'll convert like @Ricardo13x did. I'm pretty doubtful of my skills to do this so i may have to find someone to guide me or do it for me. $$$$

try to find a 4x4. i've noticed a lot more are available in northern california. expand your search.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense. And I’m not in a rush yet just I know once my current tacoma finally starts to deteriorate past me wanting to fix the engine, then I’ll want to start looking for an auto 4x4

Bro, I made a list of parts and added to the conversion thread(https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/05-15-2wd-to-4wd-conversion-guide-for-dummies.716703/) anyone with some patience a transmission jack and some time available can get it done, I’m still working on the edition of the conversion video. Enjoy the read, and sorry for planting ideas :D btw you can contact me anytime you have any questions or doubts. Already over 1k over the conversion with not a single issue leak. No ADD or TCS to worry about.
