I get it. I did swings for 6 years and enjoyed it. Living in L.A. I was able to counter commute. That (almost) made it bearable...
My sister worked a crazy rotation schedule for a while. She would do a regular shift for a week, swing shift for a week, graveyard for a week, and then a week off. Absolutely nuts!! :der:

In the late 80s, when I starting working 24/7 op centers in the Air Force, the two standard shifts were ddssmm 3 off on 8hrs shifts, or DDNN 3 off on 12hrs. That sucked...worse was when manning got low we worked 12s DDNN 2 off...you slept the first day off, did laundry and house stuff chores the second day off; then back to it. That could be a grind. Never liked or understood the "why" of rotating shifts.

The funny part was/is ... you can achieve the same coverage working a "Panama" schedule 12s...controllers are either days or nights work Mon/Tue, off Wed/Thu, work Fri/Sat/Sun, off Mon/Tue, work Wed/Thu, off Fri/Sat/Sun...and repeat. Rotate from days to nights every 3 months. Once I made rank and was Superintendent, that's the schedule I put every op center I ran on. Controllers love it; every other weekend is a 3 day break. And because controller morale was good, I rarely had issues with additional duties, training, and such. I called it the productivity of morale. Critics say it is poor "resource" management because controllers only work half the days of a month. But I have a problem thinking of people as nothing more than a manpower resource. When critiqued, those I outranked, or who didn't matter to me, generally got the "FO" ... those requiring a tactful response (read Officers), I explained it was no different than paying shift differentials and Sunday premiums in the civilian sector.
If this TLDR or :threadjacked:, my apologies to all.

There is a lot to be said about positive morale. You can't measure it, therefore the bean counters don't like or consider it. Too bad as it pays huge dividends to maintain high morale.
