Driving down the highway, a guy on a hellcat passed and then merged in front of me and I guess kicked at rock and hit the taco.

I have insurance with USAA and they said if safelite can repair it, it would be free. Replacement would incur my deductible. They are coming over to my work on Monday to evaluate and try to fix it.

Anyone had this happen and had repairs done or did you just get full replacement? Attached a few pics of it, can’t get good lighting to show it. The diameter including the hair lines is around the same as a US quarter.

Not my truck by my wife’s car. I’d just relax and wait till Monday to see what they say. Nothing you can do about it now. Enjoy your weekend

That's a pretty good size, they won't be able to completely repair it. Once they fill it though, it shouldn't spread. Assuming the safelite tech knows what they're doing.

Had a similar size one on my Durango, had less than 1000 miles on it when it happened. The repair hadn't spread a mm when I traded it in 9.5 years and 180k mi later.

I use those rainx repair kits. Seem to work okay. My windshield isn't that old and it's already chipped to hell. I noticed a bunch of chips in the top side of my hood too. The top side! Freakin AZ.

Just like above poster mention. I had a rock chip such as yours, probably kicked up by semi trucks since I highway drive a lot, thus bought Rainx repair kit from Walmart and fixed it myself.

Be aware, even though your insurance company will cover the repair i.e. 'the repair is free', it still counts as a claim.
If it's only $40 or $50 to repair it, I would just pay it out of pocket.
Also a word to the wise, don't pay for roadside assistance with your insurance. If you call them for any reason it's a claim.
And we know what insurance companies do to customers who have claims :)

I had it done on my truck. You will still see it, but it won’t crack more. Also, it won’t be as noticeable. I drive 100 miles a day. Waiting for a big crack to replace the windshield.

Insurance broker here. No truer words have ever been written. There is no such thing as a free claim. Pay for it yourself. DONT EVEN call and inquire with your company if it is free. Doing so portrays you, in their eyes, as "presenting a greater profile of risk" as one underwriter once told me. Personally I don't claim anything until the damages get up over $3000. Report ALL liability claims ASAP though.

I got an almost identical chip a few weeks ago and Safelite did the repair. I can faintly see where the repair was done, but I expected that. As long as the damage doesn’t spread, I’m good

thanks for the input. I’ll see what it costs out of pocket versus having them bill USAA. I’m not that worried about filing a claim if the repair cost is significant, I’m sure hail and chips are a normal thing for well established companies.

I had quite a few hail dents on the wife’s Rav4 after a storm last spring, put in a claim for paintless removal which was around $2000 worth of labor and rates stayed the same. I just don’t worry much about these things and actually use the services that I pay for already. Kids and reduced work hours lately make it a hard decision to drop extra significant money.

I’m also sure they rather pay for the small repair now (if possible) than a full windshield with calibration of the stupid camera

Thats what I’m trying to go for too, just no further damage, I’m sure when the time comes(hope not) I’ll have a good reason for a full replacement vs this small chip

If that chip is anywhere near your line of site even if it is repairable, it might cause issues with flare driving straight into the sun. If you need to replace the windshield, only use known OEM glass, which is not what you get with Safelite. And if you have TSS with the cameras behind the glass, those have to be recalibrated as well. The same thing happened to my wife's 2020 Forester w/eyesight last week and the quote from Santa Monica Subaru was $2200. Totally nuts.

I know right? Even the base models all come with the TSS camera and it just sounds like a head ache. Thankfully its on the center of the glass away from my direct field of view

I used to live in AZ too...that state is hard as hell on windshields!
I had my '21 in the dealer for oil change and they had a guy there for chipped windshields. 5 minute call to insurance and it was all done. The vacuum/epoxy repairs seem to really hold up too in my experience.

That's a $20 fix at a glass specialty place. I've done similar ones many times. They can even stop cracks that are already few inches long from spreading.

AZ roads are a death sentence on windshields. My wife has already had two windshields replaced since January and I had one replaced.

Other insurance companies might, but USAA won’t screw you like that over a window chip repair, I’ve had a few done through them over the years.

Safelite has an option to "upgrade" to OEM glass but it bumps the price (for me at least) from $850 to about $1300. Had a rock hit the windshield below the wipers a few weeks ago and the crack has now grown up about 10 inches. Geico won't bump rates for comp claims (I should know, I've had three since 2018) but I had literally just gotten my truck back after squirrels had a feast on the front end wiring so I didn't feel like paying another $500 deductible.
