Tale of the tape for the day.
Five jobs turned into...
Goto supply and pick up needed items for the day, forgot one thing, but went to the job anyway to confirm the problem I suspected.
Part not in stock.

Got to the first favor/job.... help measure for a new spa cover, turns into.... oh hey can you fix this crap fake flower shit lattice, by securing it with zip ties. Yup.
Oh hey can you get this thing down from up there, I need it.
Oh hey can you grab this table I stuffed behind a cabinet in my office (can we all say "hoarder "), yup
Oh hey can you fix this tricycle, it doesn't roll right.

That took an hour.
Goto the next job... read the first statement.. part not available.
Goto 3rd job. Pool is fairly clean, but the spa has drained itself again
Pool has a leak in the skimmer, but the spa keeps draining back to the pool. I have replaced most of the parts for check valves and diverted.
The problem persists, I explain everything that I am doing to rectify the problem, but nothing works. Btw, he is super cheap and questions everything i do. I just want your pool to be serviceable and operate properly, but unfortunately he won't spend the money to fix the skimmer or the spa problem.
Off to the final job of the pump installation as you've already seen.
the day is over and I get to go home to a quiet house. Wife and kid are at the beach with a friend.

After typing all of this, I need to go in and skim the pool for the recent widow. Her husband passed away about 3 weeks ago. They live in a historic house.... Joe dimaggio Marylin Monroe honeymoon house.

How much $$ did you charge for the tricycle repair?

 

Could've been better.

 

I get paid 20$ an hour for handyman crap.
I get paid 95$ an hour being a pool repair guy.
I get paid roughly 6 to 8 bucks an hour cleaning pools.
But if you don't have pools to clean, you pretty much have nothing to repair. That's the catch 22.

 

The no pool/no repair makes sense. I imagine the pool cleaning rates are very competitive.

 

What most don't understand is the extras that go along with it. I can charge you a flat rate or I can charge you a cheap rate, but with the cheap rate.... I only give you so much chlorine. If you exceed that amount I another, then you gave to pay extra. Such a hassel to keep track of every month.
I charge a flat rate, extras include filter cleanings algae treatments and any repair of the equipment or pool structure/tile.
In other words....I will keep your pool clean and blue regardless and make up my losses on the repairs.
Most don't see it that way. They will let the pool turn green, then call you to say there is a poblem... maybe.
Or it just a surprise when you show up.

Sounds like a lot of extra accounting work/time to track every little extra.

 

It is, and when you do this kind of work, you end up compromising a lot. Kind of like car/truck maintenance. It is what it is and people are what they are.
