Special Service Tool - Crank Pulley Remover

NegroTundra asked me to post pics/print of my homemade Special Service Tool (SST) for removing the crank pulley.

Here it is.

EDIT: Please note, I screwed up on my print! Rotate the three bolt holes 90 degrees. Arghhhhh. See picture.

I use the couple nuts to stick through the holes in the SST plate and thread onto the studs behind the crank pulley. The "tee" post lays against the frame rail and locks there as pressure is applied to the crank pulley nut. If I recall, it takes 217 ft-lbs to torque the crank pulley nut.

217 ft lb on that means unless you are Superman you need a torque multiplyer.

Unless you have the tools you just as well pay someone to do the job or risk engine damage down the road.

Are the holes on the diagnal ends of the flat stock there for a reason? Or were they just there when you got the plate?

 

How do you keep from bending the bolts? I made a tool out of bar stock and bent several grade 8.8 bolts.

 

Wouldn't be a bad idea to use a New crank bolt too.

 

Can you rent a torque multiplier and "pulley locker" from Autozone? I bet they have at least one of these tools for rent. 210ft-lbs sounds awful high. Is that out of the FSM? I think my wrench only goes to 150ft-lbs darn it.

 

Did you catch my note above where the holes need to be rotated?

Anyway, about the diagonals holes...they were already there.

 

I used a 250 ft-lbs torque wrench (I'm guessing a 24" handle on it) and I had no problems breaking it loose. Of course I am a fine specimen of the male physique....
