    The Travails of a Do-It-Yourself Motorcycle Mechanic...with Gritto. :)

    Yeah, changing tires kinda sucks.
It's a real knuckle buster job.
And the difficulty goes up exponentially if you're putting an oversized fat tire on the rear.
    But it looks so kewl.

Nevertheless, it's a point of pride that no mechanic (besides me) has touched the bike...apart from inspections.

Had to replace and relocate the rear signal lamps when I mounted leather saddlebags.

    One thing leads to another...

One cold morning my stock double-walled pipes cracked.
I replaced them with V&H Cruzers with baffles and packing.
(I once had an Intruder with Cobra pipes...no baffles. Ouch.)
Boy, those Cruzers are still effin' loud though.
If I'm in the mood to be an asshole, I'll blip the throttle.

Changing the pipes caused carb farts and required adjusting the fuel/air mixture.
The adjustment screw on the carb had a cover on it which had to be drilled out.
Guess they didn't want me fucking with it. :notsure:

Which in turn required stripping off the EPA anti smog junk (which is ineffective and ridiculous on a motorcycle anyway).
    Why? (I hear you asking)...
Because the new pipes and f/a adjustment caused deceleration popping/backfiring.
And the hoses to said EPA mandated junk had to be marbled to block them off.
Then, the nipple on the back of the airbox for the smog recirculator hose had to be plugged.

Like I said, one thing leads to another...

Other than those things, I've resisted pretty well the temptation to mod.

I did put on a small deflector shield.
The wind beating on your chest gets tiring...
Oh, and a sissy bar for Mrs Gritto in case she consents to ride with me...which she never does.

Today looks like a good day for a ride.

Amen. There is an amazingly satisfying feeling of pride when you get things done on your own.
I practically rebuilt my very first motorcycle one component at a time. From adjusting the valves and rebuilding the carbs, and plenty of electrical repairs. It had been abused by the previous owners.

I even made my own custom bead-breaker when I replaced the tires.
