They look like bolt on accessories, that you should be able to buy from your local Toyota parts dealer.

    ~ Or ~

for probably the same amount of money you could buy an aftermarket tri-fold lockable cover, 2 Yeti coolers and a years supply of beer

The bins are completely removable with 3-4 bolts. Cool thing is they lock but they take up way too much space in the already small bed. Also, living in AZ I'm not sure how well anything can be insulated in the heat here. If I was going to get one I would just wait for someone to not want the one on their 2021trail edition lol.

I own a 2021 Tacoma Trail Edition and I used the bed boxes for tools and as a cooler for the first 5 months I owned the truck, but I just removed them last week because I cannot get a hard tunnel cover to fit with them installed. And yes, they bolt right over the existing bed, no modifications needed to remove. Other than requiring a very beefy impact wrench for removing the left and right tie down bolts at the tailgate, removing them was a snap.

As mentioned, it is difficult finding a tonneau cover that fits, the only one that I found that does fit is the diamondback. I like the diamondback but I prefer a rolling hard or tri-fold hard cover. However after I removed the boxes I still seem to be having a problem getting most covers to fit because the bulkhead bed rail behind the cab window (not the tie down rail which my truck does not have) does not sit flush with the plastic side caps around the rest of the bed. Therefore the bulkhead rail sits up about a quarter inch higher than the side caps and creates a gap (see attached photo). If anyone can confirm if their 2020 or older sits flush, I'd like to track down a bulkhead rail from an older model to replace mine so I can get a cover to fit. This has been a major pita finding a rolling hard or trifold hardcover to fit my truck.

Mods? We don't need no stinking mods.
Seems like you're giving up quite a bit of bed space for a really tiny cooler.

    Not a fan.

I hadn’t even noticed that my bulkhead rail was a little higher than the side panels when I installed my Lomax trifold hard cover. As you can see in the pictures, the side rails that come with the Lomax are about even with the bulkhead, so it all worked out. The Lomax side rails bolt to the existing bed rails. The silver tape on my bed rails I put on to provide a smoother surface for the Lomax cover front panel seal.

Are people reporting the drum brakes?

    Oh I know.

Just that the context of the list you were responding to was things not operating correctly. Taking that context into consideration, it made your addition amusing to me.

Yes, I know some people don't like the drum brakes, but they do operate just fine and reliability-wise they haven't been a concern like the other items on the list you responded to.

Had to sell my 17 Tacoma for a tow rig in order to pull my new home. Still here for a bit to keep in touch.
Seems like a Decked box would be a better option. :notsure:

While I agree that the execution of these boxes could be better, my truck came with them and they store more than what I initially thought possible. I’m not sure they warrant all the hate, that said the cooler idea is pretty lame. I keep my recovery equipment and other miscellaneous items I carry daily and what I like most of about them is they are lockable. There are definitely better options out there if your truck didn’t come with them. Once my topper gets installed I will removing mine.

Anybody know if Toyota is installing the 2021 Trail Edition wheels, the Off Road wheels finished in the dark gray metallic color on models other than the trail edition?

I saw a new SR5 DCLB with the 2021 Trail Edition wheels at a dealership.

The wheels could of been taken off a trail edition that received a dealer installed lift kit, and aftermarket wheels.

What a waste of the bed, you are supposed to be able to carry things in your truck bed.
