That's right, only took one time. The second time I was wearing glasses and STILL got a hot spec in my eye... Now I have one of these hanging on the wall by the grinders.

Wait until the doc pulls out the drill to cleanup the rust ring in your eye! That’s when the real fun starts.

 

That’s what happened to me both times. 0/10 would not recommend.

 

It happened to me wearing glasses also. Now I wear glasses and a face shield when I grind. Have been looking into something a little more contoured like that for better protection in tight spaces though.

 

Didn't have to go that far. I did have to draw a dot on the blank wall so that I didn't move my eye to focus on the needle that was about to stab me in the eye.

That's a great shield. It's comfortable, wraps around the sides, top and bottom of your head, has a welding hood style tightening mechanism, the lens is replaceable, and it has a lip around the lens to prevent it getting scratched if you lay it on the work bench. I rarely even bother with glasses anymore.

Been building a bumper from scratch. All the cut off wheels and welding. Now for a few more gussets followed by all the flap discing.

 

Picked up a couple of these magnetic hooks to use as hood holders.

 

Buddy did an oopsie on a trail. Loaded up a buddies genny and my Flux Core welder in the Rescue Rover and headed out to meet the Rescue Fucking Ranger to take me to the carnage. The Bowtie was able to make it off trail and back home just fine.

It looks great. I like that style bumper. If I didn't have other $$$ priorities (wasn't so cheap) and not wanting to invest in suspension parts, I'd be making a RR bumper first, then front.

Since it looks like you have the hitch already welded to the bumper, just wanting to ask if you have trial fit to the frame before you weld any more gussets. Not being critical, just asking. I know $hit moves during welding so the more trial fits the better.

 

It was all tacked together on the truck and I have some wiggle room in the mounts. Gussets I need are just for the hitch and to help support the swingout so I think I'll be good.

Why hitch under instead of in bumper?

 

Going with a 1-1/4" grade 8 bolt with bronze bushings again for the pivot. So won't have any issues there as long as the bumper around it is solid.

Tire is staying under the bed for this build, so didn't mind the hitch lower, and wanted it easier to access. Swingout will hold water, gas, propane, and a hi lift.

Were you also already on the trail? Seems odd to go to someone to weld something when you guys could have just replaced the ITRE no? haha

Dude so stoked on how good this is coming out. Dislike the low hanging hitch though. Even if the tire stays where it is, you know your departure angle is based on that receiver and matters more than anything. I know it wouldn't keep you from being able to do an obstacle but it's gonna get shredded if you wheel it like you did the first gen.

 

Give it 6mos. He'll modify it to be up in the bumper.

 

Not going to wheel this thing like the 1st gen. Plus it's still quite a bit higher than the stock hitch.

Maybe. I'll cut it off and move it if it becomes a problem.

 

They were already on the trail and couldn't find a way to get it back to the parking lot. Apparently Chevy doesn't make the ZR2 Tie rod readily available.

 

Meh stock hitch don't count. But cool, yeah i figured and I dig it so that the first gen can be the offroad rig you beat on. to what comes of that

That's dumb. Hopefully that guy carries a trail spare from now on.
