The length and location of the antenna affect signal strength, but not the length of the cable itself.

    Yeah.
Yay, the pro is chiming in!

@Bat Trd the ditch light location is not terrible, but Chip keeps bugging me to put my antenna on the roof, which would definitely be a better location. I just don't want to drill a hole or run a magnetic mount with a cable through the door. For the most part, we don't have issues. I have the 3dB "ghost" antenna now, but considering getting the 6dB whip for a little extra height.

For a CB, yes, cable length will affect signal because a CB signal is 36' (a multiple of 18), so 18' works best. For GMRS, not so much. All cables and connectors are going to attenuate the signal somewhat. If you get a quality cable with quality connectors, your loss will be negligible. The plane and placement of the antenna is as impt as anything.

You da man! I can speak more intelligently about HAM than CB. Sometimes location can be deceptive. A few years back, I was trying to find a location for my antenna, wanting to avoid a front mount and roof mount, and designed my own. At first glance, it would appear that the location wouldn't work, but the SWR was spot on and the 3rd Gens have less bed flex. These are older pictures, but you get the idea.

Measuring SWR is going to be different than placement of the antenna. Standing wave ratio is the the ratio measurement of the signal leaving the antenna vs the amount of signal being fed back into the radio during transmission. Feedback not only creates heat, but if it is high enough it will kill your radio. SWR closer to 1 is obvi good then. Feedback was so bad on my Land Cruiser set up that I could hear my CB radio over my stereo. SWR can be corrected by changing the length of the antenna. Signal strength in RX and TX is determined by the location of the antenna and the plane. When the antenna is on a flat surface that both conducts and reflects, such as your roof, it's going to TX and RX more uniformly in all directions. Few if any of us use our radios for more than trail rides in close groups, so installing wherever will usually work. We have more problems hearing with being too close than too far. If you're gonna try to hit and use repeaters, higher is better on a conductive and reflective surface for maximum signal distance.

I really love my Father's day present this year. I know it's from Harbor Freight but it has really good reviews

There is a video on YouTube about how to seal the control box. Water intrusion is the only negative thing I’ve ever read, so with a little extra effort, it’s a top notch winch. Great Father’s Day prezzie, congrats.

I see a bunch of guys that live up in Missouri around the Mark Twain National Forest that use and like these winches. The wireless control is a great benefit. The only winch advice I have is that some ARB bumpers require 8 clock positions for positioning the clutch handle instead of 4. I have one of those bumpers but can work around it because the grill opens with the hood.

ARB is the only bumper that I know about that requires a special winch. I see people using Apex winches to pull stumps. They look good. I think that 12k will pull the bumper off some trucks before they give up.

    So. Many. Stickers.
Most bumper manufacturers will tell you which winches will and won't work with their bumpers. Most are fine but there are a few that'll point out you may have to move the control box or whatnot depending on the winch.

Mine is '94...hmmm...don't think it's gonna bring that much. AND, green is the most desired color for some reason.

    Yeah.
    Yeah, green is worth $50K.

It's a great museum specimen. It would be hard to start modding that thing.
