    Folks,
Any one know how to turn off the tailgate autolock? For the 2021 and presumably earlier it automatically locks when you lock the cabin locks. Way I use the truck, I'll often be getting stuff out of the tonneau covered bed with the cabin locked.
    Thanks

If you're even able to turn off the autolock feature, I would try looking on your headunit settings with the other door lock settings

    Maybe use the key itself?

You could permanently disable it by unplugging the harness in the tailgate.

I wish my tailgate had an auto lock.

It’s set to lock/unlock on either passenger or drivers door ( depending on dealer / install wiring). Only way to disable that is to unplug it, (where the tailgate meets bed). But then you’ll need to manually lock / unlock with key.

I get this... not an option on my Tacoma but my work truck has it and we’re constantly driving from spot to spot and tailgate locks everytime it’s put up. Very annoying the way I use it. Although Could see how it would be helpful for a lot of people.

edit: sorry no helpful advice just venting about the inconvenience with my use of the truck.

    Three options:

    1. Disable auto-lock
    2. Unlock your truck, open and close a door
    3. Disable the tailgate lock

You don't have to unplug it from inside the tailgate. You can unplug the cabin side in the front passenger kick panel.

As others have said, it's all or nothing: auto all the time or none at all.

Don't mind losing the tail gate auto lock completely, especially as I am going to put on a cap which will make the tail gate lock moot and I will be locking the cap by hand. Looking at the video, it looks like I can pop the cover and unplug the power lock if there isn't a software way of changing it.

They're wired separately. You don't need to cut anything. If you search the forums for the tailgate lock installation instructions, you can find the connector you need to unplug in the kick panel.

I would guess the camera and the lock have different wires going to them. My truck came with the back up camera and I added the lock aftermarket. I assume you just unplug the harness going to the lock and you are good to go.

Like 6MT mentioned, you might be able to accomplish the same by unplugging the harness inside the passenger footwell, which would be much easier (theres like 20 torx screws on the tailgate). I'm not sure what the OEM setup is like but my aftermarket lock piggybacks off the OEM door lock harness.

I'll have a look inside the passenger foot well, see if I can find the plug. Seems to me that Tacoma should offer this. Maybe its only an issue for work trucks and that isn't the primary market.

It would be easier to unplug it under the bed, where the wire harnesses plug together. It's just behind the rear bumper. No need to disassemble anything.

Looks like there are two lines out of the tail gate, one is the frame line, the other the tailgate line., according to the manual. Which one is the lock line? My guess is that its the frame line as that looks like a major harness that carries lots of stuff. I found one of the plugs, need to look for the other. Not as straight forward as shown in the owners manual.

It should be zip tied to the same wire loom as the rear view camera wiring harness, if it was done at the dealership. An easier way would be disconnecting the Male connector that's used to hookup the tailgate, from the bed bezel that's underneath the rear underside of the truck. I'll try to get a picture for you when I get home.

One line is the rear camera and the other is the power tailgate. Here's the instructions. Look at picture 7-11. This might help.

Thanks a lot, I'll crawl around this weekend and see if I can sort it. Becomes more critical when my cap gets on. Meantime the KISS solution is lock the cab, then take the key and unlock the bed.

I just installed the toyota tailgate lock kit.
It would be easy to unplug the harness under the bed or behind the passenger kick panel.
