Tacoma Brakes Thumbs Down

I agree. Probably gonna get me a 2022 lol. When you look at the competition Toyota wins hands down with Honda a close second.

 

If I get another Tacoma i'm going backwards, 1st or 2nd gen

 

That’s not just a Toyota thing. Every vehicle I owned with rear drum brakes did this.

 

Yup! And I have no problem with that. All I really wanted was a simple truck with a stick and good off road capability.

 

What’s the largest wheel I can put over my drum brakes if I change my oil every day and I don’t want to void my warranty or change my mileage?

 

I never had this issue on any of my aircooled bugs or my Mk1 GTis. The rear bell-crank design is the failure point here, too much moving shit vs. just having the cable go into the drum

 

I have never had a drum brake fail. Ever in 42 years. On any vehicle.

 

Same, been driving for 16 years. All vehicles had drums.

 

I've owned FOUR wheels drum brake Toyota's likely before you were even born. Now I will admit the front drum brake one's were a PITA because adjusting them so they grabbed the same was black magic. Other then that, ehhh, I've replaced way more rear disc brakes for issues to include seized pistons in calipers and dragging issues then I ever had to mess with drum brakes for. Disc pads freeze also and will lock up your axles, the rotors rust out badly, warping is far more common, emergency brakes are a pain for discs and most still are with more gimmicks then a chinese novelty company.

The one place where disc's really shine over drums are in less fade and faster cooling, if you are playing race car driver on the road with a Tacoma might I suggest something just a wee bit more sporting may be a better choice, even a 1.6 L Miata with gerbil power is going to eat you for lunch and still have leftovers to go. Yeah, yeah, ''muh 0-60 will beat him'' sure but then you're not even in the running after that, after the first couple of corners, a twist or two, and braking, you will be some little speck in the rear view mirror that looks like a gnat.

Personally I have never understood people who buy a truck [even a small one] and then try to pretend it's a sporty car. It's not. Just buy a sporty car in the first place, you'll be a happier person.

I have never, even once, looked at a low slung sports car and thought, ''yeah, this sucker would kick arse off road and on the trails.''

 

Live in the rustbelt and only maintenance required on my 10 year old Tacoma's rear brakes is annual removal for inspection. Still original everything! However, our rear disk equipped vehicles require pads every 12-18 months and rotors every 2 years. Fronts no problem. It appears road salt and grime flicks up from front wheels and destroy rear disk brakes. I like rear drum brakes.

Never had the brake drums or shoes fail. My last Tacoma had a bad proportioning valve. This rendered the rear brakes totally inoperable. E brake still worked but the brake fluid was stuck behind the frozen / corroded P valve.

I tell you what...that sucks.

 

Mine came with that mod factory installed. They even put a nice lever right by my hand that I can use to engage it at any time. Pretty cool of Toyota if you ask me.

 

My '07 4Runner disc brakes had nasty brake fade in the mountains after putting on a set of "high-end" ceramic pads. I went back to metallic pads and the fade pretty much disappeared. I had a long talk with a mechanic about that and I can't vouch for how true it us but he claims that ceramic pads suffer from fade if you have any decent weight to the vehicle. I tend to believe him from experience.

My Taco seems to stop faster than my wife's Camry but maybe that's just me being used to the pedal engaging quicker. Hers pedal has a bit of spongey feel to it by comparison.

Had my wheel cylinder blow out at 113k but my truck is loads heavier than stock so im not knocking the design of Toyota haha.
