The hybrid drivetrain on the Maverick has much better MPG than the Ridgeline or Avalanche. That with the low price seems like it would be appealing as a daily driver for someone how doesn't really need a truck but likes the utility.

Yeah I think, for so long, pick ups have been compared to other pickups because of the specific needs and design of the truck.

One of the failings of the Ridgeline was that it tried to convert traditional truck buyers. "Why buy a Ridgeline when I can buy a Tacoma or Ranger?" Etc.

The Maverick, thus comes in and comes up against the same questions. But the question you should actually be asking is "Why buy a Corolla/Elantra/Civic when I can buy a Maverick?"

And frankly, I think they caught Hyundai with their pants down on pricing and economy, even if the traditional truck stats are lacking.

Not my cup of tea, but they're going to sell the heck out of it.

Agreed. I think people pine for a small cheap pickup in theory, but wouldn’t actually buy a 1st gen Tacoma if it was on sale today.

That question has been asked already, and those people ended up buying RAV4/CR-V/Santa Cruz/Escape. Toyota sold 240,000 Corollas in the US last year, but 430,000 RAV4s.

    Starting MSRP CR-V: $25k
    Starting MSRP RAV4: $26k
    Starting MSRP Tucson*: $23k
    Starting MSRP Escape: $25k

Starting MSRP Maverick: $21k with destination.

    Starting MSRP Corolla: $20k
    Starting MSRP Civic: $21k
    Starting MSRP Elantra: $19k
(Not sure if destination is included in these prices, only quicky googled).

At least you tried to make an argument! It should also be noted that the Mavericks combined estimated MPG is better than those SUVs and comparable to the economy cars.

So despite the higher pricetag, the RAV4 outsold the Corolla two to one...

Yes, so you can imagine how a vehicle with a comparable price tag (and fuel economy) to a Corolla will do.

Why did Ford thing a mini-Ridgeline look-a-like would be something to strive for?

I love everything about this truck besides how it looks. For what I use my truck for this would fit my needs perfectly. However I would never spend $20k+ on a truck that looked like this.

    Work in progress

To be fair, it is hard to tell with Ford vehicles. Sometimes the pictures look great and then in person the car is so ugly it cannot be believed. And, a lot of times the vehicle looks better in person than it does on screen. This will be really interesting to see when it is sitting on the Ford lots. Ford has pretty decent product design and they don't get as much credit as they should for that. I am probably in the minority but I don't think the Ranger is not a bad design at all. The new Explorer looks pretty nice, too. Personally, I am not buying those vehicles but the design is pretty nice.

Ford is a great American company with a great heritage. I really want them to do well. And I do think it is worth pointing out they are a company really doing innovating things and taking all kinds of interesting risks. Remember the Flex? Wouldn't buy one but really appreciated that they came out with that. The whole let's go after Jeep with the Bronco is pretty great, too. And now the Maverick. Can't wait to see it in person. Might be a good scoot around town, project kind of car.

Overall, love the Maverick ... and the key point for all of us is that shaking up the truck market is good for all of us, even if we don't buy those vehicles. Toyota has to be watching ... and any pressure on Toyota is also good for us!

I might just get on the waiting list for one, to replace my wife’s outback. Checks 90% of the boxes and will beat her city fuel economy by 100%?!! Comes down to the family budget and use, this fits almost all of them.

Edit: I’ll also add that Ford bought an early version of Toyota’s hybrid and started shoving it into everything they could and it’s a reliable and proven technology. The more I read, the more I like the Maverick for my wife’s next car.

I highlighted the problem. Don't think of this as a truck. The Maverick is something you buy to replace a hatchback or compact sedan.

It's a brilliant compact car with a bed.

It’s perfect for like 90% of truck owners, so it won’t sell at all

I recall the Ford Maverick as a POS 2 door coupe in the 70's.

I was thinking same thing to replace wife's outback! Though living where it snows we'd have to get the AWD version so not sure on that cost

I don't know how much shaking up this is gonna do in the truck world, but I'm pretty sure it's gonna kill more compact cars and midsize sedans.

Probably some compact SUVs as well.

I definitely agree. I want a truck like this for daily driver/Home-Depot runs. It's not a burly Real 'Murican PEW PEW PEW(TM) brodozer, and it doesn't need to be for 90% of what trucks are used for in reality.
