@ Anyone in this thread that would be so generous as to answer a few questions.

Forgive my ignorance, but I've sunk a few hours into this thread and I'm just going to throw these out there, risking the possibility they've already been answered and I've missed it.

I'm 24 pages in, I've skimmed the other 49 and so far I'm just not seeing a deal breaker.

Is this mounting system acceptable, or have I missed something better in the latter pages of this thread?

Lastly, is this Head Unit like a tablet? IE, does it have storage space that I can use to download and store offline maps, such as in Google Maps, etc., for use outside of cellular coverage?

OK....let me help you. If you are putting this in your Tacoma Gen 3, the kit includes everything necessary for the install. You do not need a mounting kit, because the factory brackets can be modified for the install. The mounting kit makes it easier if you do not want to modify your factory brackets. You can buy the SMA adapter that I posted in thread #1442 if you wish to use the OEM gps antenna.

The unit comes fully Carplay and Android Auto equipped. The software will be installed on the unit when it comes.

This unit is essentially an android tablet. Any app you can install on the tablet, you can install on this head unit. This includes storage of offline maps.

Your cellular coverage is the coverage of the cellular device you attach to the unit. If it is your phone, your coverage applies, and if it is a cellular adapter, which Dasitia sells, it is the cellular coverage of the SIM you use.

I went ahead and ordered the head unit and Metra mounting kit. If the mounting kit helps even a little, it'll have been $18 bucks well spent.
I paid the premium to get it shipped from Amazon, should any problems arise.

I'll now go ahead and get that GPS adapter coming, as I definitely would like to retain use of the OEM antenna.
A quick question as the the SMA adapter: They are offering a "straight" as well as a "right angled" adapter. Is one preferable over the other?
According to their site they are custom made to order, for obvious reasons I'd like to get it right the forst time.

either adapter will work. I bought the straight one and electrical taped the connection to ensure it does not come apart.

Has anyone gotten the OEM backup camera to work with this?

 

My OEM backup camera was plug and play. I also got the front camera to work using the Germs Lab controller.

My Metras haven't yet shipped and I'm down with anything that helps facilitate a smooth install..

 

I'm about a month into mine, which is the same unit from Amazon except for a gen2 Tacoma. I'm pretty happy with it but I'll throw out two thoughts. It is like an android tablet except all these Chinese HUs seem to limit what you can connect via bluetooth. I had hoped to be able to monitor a rear fridge temp via BT, but apparently you can only connect phones, ODBII devices, and TPMS. Also true for Joying, but since I never saw it in print for Dasaita, here it is as a heads up. It sees things like keyboards but won't pair, and dasaita says this is for security, which is baloney. Also, I would test your wifi strength before you finally button up the dashboard. Mine can't see my home router which is through one layer of drywall and insulation, not to mention we are surrounded by everyone's routers, printers, and doodads. It can only see my phone hotspot a foot away, which is annoying when it's time to download a big update or something. This could just be a loose stock antenna, or it needs a bigger one. Either way i have to tear the dashboard apart again. All that said, I only attempted once before and failed to install an HU years ago. This was really easy to figure out other than time, and I even hacked in some after market amazon steering wheel buttons (just wireless controls that I havent decided where to permanently affix yet, Im gen 2 2007 so no canbus).

Cant speak to carplay, but AA Wireless works great, pops right up. They dont advertise that as wireless, but I can confirm it works. I tried the Malaysk full ROM, AA wireless works but can take 5-10 minutes to connect. I'm back to stock for now. I'm pretty happy with it. And from what I gather most of the CHinese units function pretty much the same.

These things are definitely not without their eccentricities, to put it kindly.
Coming off Entune, If this thing will just work, I'll put up with the shortcomings.
I don't do Apple, so good to hear the AA is doing it's thing.

So they (as least now) come with a quasi manual, which I didn't realize.
Looks like it might actually be helpful, too.

GPS adapter and head unit arrived same day, just need a few hours of uninterrupted time to get after this.
Here's to hoping this thing puts Entune in the rear view mirror.
Otherwise, it's back to Amazon and another 500 clams for the Pioneer..

 

So I'm getting ready to button this thing up, but I've got one OEM wire left over in the dash and nowhere to put it.
Can anyone confirm what this? TPMS possibly?
Is it ok to leave it unhooked?

You have one for the OEM radio antenna and one for the OEM GPS antenna. I'd love to tell you which is which, but it has been too long and I have slept since then.

TPMS is read through he CANBUS, which is handled by the CANBUS adapter built into the harness provided.

The guy in this video seems to blow it off and say something about it staying unplugged @ 8:33 in this vid.

EDIT to note: FM radio is picking up great, and I'm in the boonies. GPS is functioning, too.

At the point you mentioned in the video, he showed connecting the white OEM coaxial connector to the radio harness.

 

Sorry, it happens quickly, but he seems to dismiss it both physically and verbally at exactly 8:35 - 8:36.

@2:52 in the vid, he confirms your white coax connector is the factory GPS connector. That is the connector you should use the SMA adapter into, in order to retain the factory GPS antenna and not use the one provided in the kit.

 

OBD readers do work just need certain ones or setup correctly but on other stuff the BT on the HU's does not support all of what you were doing as noted. I tried tons of different things too.

 

GPS is working like champ. I used the adapter in the OP to connect to the factory antenna line. (I believe)
Could it be the OEM microphone cable?
