Have any of you guys worked in a matrix sub flat organizational structure before? My company is generally mstyle when broad spectrum is involved, but operates fstyle within each pocket project. I understand what is happening and how it functions, but I’m looking for some real world tips on maximizing any/all strengths of the more fluid approach.

Yes I’ve read online articles, yes I studied this in school, no I have not come across an organization that uses both synchronously, no I don’t have official documentation for the channel formalities.

Any conversation is good conversation, I always appreciate an open brainstorm.

Our company has implemented a “fly by the seat of our pants” strategy that seems to be keeping us guessing most of the time. It’s challenging, but I do enjoy getting a paycheck...

heres a piece of advice, you were hired since you have a skillset no one else at the company has, which means they likely wont understand what youre saying like the rest of us dont. A part of being successful when you have skills others dont is knowing how to talk about what you do in a way everyone else understands. In IT, its commonly known as “avoiding technical jargon.”

See if reddit had a subreddit dedicated to your area of work maybe? Might be a good way to connect with others in the field.

Can’t blame me for trying :notsure:

I found a few with the two styles separated that were a little helpful, but most led down the path @imthejaybird is talking about

So curiosity got to me. I cant find much on the sub flat but what I can find looks like the typical auto dealership setup. A GM over managers of specific departments based on function with duties assigned to next level under employees completing multiple projects at once based on their skillset.

Am I in the ballpark with a 5 year old explanation or am I totally missing the mark?

Wow, times have changed since the nineties as far as cheap aftermarket sheet metal. I finally found Certifit parts in Arlington TX and they are supposed to stock my hood and bumper. I ordered the smaller parts from Carpartsdot com as their prices were a good 30 plus percent better on most stuff.
I’ll try the yards suggested when I go to see if I can find a door.

Keystone has gone for almost retail pricing on stuff. I don’t know if their wholesale prices are more in line with reality but almost $400 for a bumper cover others are selling for under $100 seems like they don’t want to deal with diy guys. Back when I was putting together 90s mini trucks they were my go to place and the parts were decently priced and good quality.

If you’ve got a first gen five lug you might want to keep your eyes out for any parts you may need in the future. Looks like the sources for front body parts are drying up fast. The Prerunner and six lug stuff appears a lot easier to find. And in the yards I have been to the 4Runner stuff is still plentiful.

10 more days before I take off on vacation. 10 days, 2500+ miles and no hotel stays. Should be another great trip with my dad!

    You’re right there.

Matrix: GM > dept. managers > leads > associates. In reverse, everyone reports to anyone above them. An associate might get a direct project from the GM, but the associate can also report to the dept. manager about said project. Associate can report to service manager, sales manager, or parts manager, depending on scope of project.

Flat: GM assigns an initiative to the dealership to sell new cars, repair and sell used cars, and increase workforce by 50 employees. A team of a sales associate, service tech, and lead are grouped to together to handle a portion of the project from start to finish. They all report to each others’ specialty — e.g. can’t sell a car that doesn’t run. If another team needs a service tech with a special skill, teams can share both service techs in tandem to eliminate down time and increase profitability. The kicker: the team lead changes by project. Selling a new car leaves service tech useless, but repairing an old one before sale now puts him in team lead.

Many progressive companies use one or the other styles as they tend to be more popular with younger workforces. Gone are the days of “moving up the ladder” over a 40 year span. I’ve just never witnessed both being implemented at the same time where I have a specialty to many (matrix) and work on any/all projects as assigned (sales, implementation, training, etc. -flat)

Still sounds better than “fly by the seat of your pants” where we’re all making it up as we go along...

Yes, the yearly camping trip with Dad. Last year we did Yellowstone, and took a similar route. This year it will be Eastern Wyoming (Devil's Tower) and South Dakota.
