If you ignored the price and fuel economy of this truck, this argument makes sense.

But there's literally no reason to buy a Ford Ecosport or Toyota Corolla now. They don't have a price or economy advantage. The Maverick is a "have your cake and eat it, too" truck.

It's not gonna convert a Ranger buyer, it's a replacement for the Fiesta, Focus and Fusion buyer.

Only reason to buy a car now is if it's an even-more-effecient Hybrid or something that's faster and higher performing. Or something that's *maybe* more stylish.

Edit: got merged from my other thread. Honestly, if there were a variant with 4x4 low range, I'd probably be considering it pretty seriously for my next vehicle.

Great idea for 90% of people. I think it will do well. I lament the omission of a six foot bed and no manual transmission, so I'll be keeping the Taco for a while. Be interesting if they come up with a shorter cab access model.

Seems too small to be very useful to me. Interested in what the target market for these are.

    Compared to trucks or cars?

It's gonna destroy cars and smaller SUVs.

    RIP Corolla

I think it looks great, btw, nice styling. A small hybrid that does "trucky" stuff is gonna do well.

Yeah I guess compared to cars, are people going to chose this over a smaller SUV or a car? Will be interesting.

I would love to see the actual data Ford is using to base the Maverick on. Not just what they say, but the actual data.

One of the interesting things I find about this truck is how Ford is looking to expand the market for truck buyers with the Maverick, not necessarily take market share from existing trucks. With apologies to Andy Warhol, in the future, everyone will drive a pick up truck, apparently!

Here is the Ford executive explaining their strategy:

"We think a lot of them will be coming out of passenger cars, or smaller SUVs where, for some of the versatility and durability, they may have had to compromise a bit."

"We think definitely there's a strong market there, certainly amongst people who maybe never considered a truck before."

I still want to see a basic 2wd small pickup that gets decent fuel mileage. Something along the lines of the 70’s thru 90s offerings of Toyota and Nissan would make me consider buying a new vehicle. The Maverick is still too large and complicated for me. But then again, I thought the original Ranger and S10 were a bit pudgy too. Reusing the Maverick name turns me off too.

It's priced like an economy car. The base FWD RAV4 ($26k) gets 30mpg combined. The base FWD(obv) Corolla for $20k gets 38mpg.

It should be noted those are just quick Google prices and I don't know if they include destination. The base FWD Maverick is $21k with destination and gets 37mpg combined.

Only comparing stats we have right now, that's phenomenal. If real world economy performance matches EPA, there's no reason to buy basic economy cars anymore unless you like they way they look or need something sufficiently small dimension-wise.

I think you nailed it and that's the audience they are targeting. It's ugly but I think it will be a big seller, they're the only player in the compact "truck" segment in the U.S. and that's all the "truck" a lot of people want or need. It's hard to call it a truck...lol.

I would be surprised if this didn't do well. between the gas mileage, cost, and utility, anyone who wants either of those would likely consider the Maverick unless they either hate trucks, or are a purist who will only own a true truck.

Then the only thing left to knock it out of contention is if they need enclosed space, or are brand loyal/have a bone to pick with Ford

Well Hyundai is gonna hit the road with their Santa Cruz at the same time but Im sure their executives are slamming their heads to the table with the Mavericks stats being released. The Santa Cruz is understandable since it's Hyundai's only truck, but the Maverick is already eating it's lunch (and dinner, and tomorrow's breakfast) with this base model.

    Yes.

Seven Passenger SUVs, style/performance/efficiency oriented cars with better economy or traditional trucks with better towing and power are really the only things to consider over this.

For people who only own one vehicle that's been a compact car, they'd be stupid to not at least consider this thing.

I can totally see the application for people who live in the city but still need the basic functions of a pick up to gravitate towards theses. I personally dont envision myself driving one but i can absolutely see the market for these.

The days of rollup windows and optional AC are long over. This is as close to that product offering as you're likely gonna get.

I too would love a simple grocery-getter / hardware store run truck, but modern people want bluetooth and all the widgets even in a "basic" vehicle.

It is sorta funny that all the automakers bloated their trucks up (Toyota Tacoma included) then now are reinventing the small truck space
