Based on the customer loading zone at Ikea, watching people try to fit a couch in a Corolla, I think they're gonna sell a shitload of these things.

100% - in Seattle you have a bunch of younger new home owners who all drive subarus that have realized that you can't fit much in your forester/crosstrek and want the capability of a truck but still compact enough to drive/park in the city. These types of folks want the car to be "outdoorsy" and take them to trail heads, so capable enough - but dont care about aftermarket parts, bigger tires, tow capacity etc.

I'm currently in the Middle East and Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Ford and Dodge all have compact work trucks here. Almost all of them are four doors but they're pretty bare bones, the couple I've looked inside had rubber floor liners and roll-up windows. I'll take a closer look the next time I see one up close and see what they have.

Unibody with no transfer case, so the floor is lower.

The current Corolla has more rear seat room than the Tacoma double cab, and that in turn is roomier than the Ranger.

I think people are talking in context of North America. In the Middle East, just having power steering is luxurious enough that Toyota puts an emblem on the tailgate for it:

Clock is always ticking. Teens today aren't aware of extinct brands like Pontiac or Oldsmobile. Some probably have never seen a 1st gen Taco in person.

I am talking in context of a comparison with modern North American vehicles, although none of the ones I mentioned would ever make it over due to emissions standards. They have upped the game over here in the last few years compared to what you're talking about (i.e. power steering emblem on tailgate) although they are still behind U.S. standards/expectations. Unfortunately I've been over here off and on for the past 23 years so I've seen the evolution. This time I'm in Bahrain, which is MUCH more civilized than most areas over here.

I'd say the Mitsubishi Mighty Max/Ram 50 1st & 2nd gens are just as good or beter than the Toyota pick up of the same year.
Ford F50 or F25 would have been an accurate description of the Maverick. Not being a body on frame truck, Ford probably does not want to associate the car based vehicle as a Fseries.

I just wish Toyota could figure out how to give us 1500lbs payload on the Tacoma....maybe they should hire the Ford engineer on this project.

    FEW

few can remember the 70's in a haze of drugs & age

cross pollination of the basic mechanics not what I was referring to

example those small van trucks the trades started using

at essentially the same purchase cost ………………………………...yet marketed at a savings ????

know a plumber after he bought set up 1...……………..had NO room for a standard water heater...……………………………………………...

had to buy a trailer to tow the water heater

the marketing of separating the consumer from his $$$$$$$

    wins out over effective merit

pardon me 4 being a cynic

That's nifty, but where's the built in cooler?

Bed coolers and bottle openers are two things I don't need a vehicle for.
