Read the manual for towing tips. Sounds like you didn't shift the shift knob to S like you're supposed to and forcibly stay under 5th gear at all times.

Keep it in lower gears and push the skinny pedal closer to the floor. The 3rd gens don't get max torque until you're at 4600 rpm. It won't hurt the engine to be running 3500-4000 rpm.

If you're getting sway the trailer isn't loaded right, too much weight on the back.

It's actually the exact same thing as VTEC. At RPMs <~3000rpm the engine uses a cam profile optimized for efficiency, beyond ~3000rpm it uses one optimized for power and torque.

For everyone that thinks they can't let the needle get too close to the scary red line the Lotus Evora has the same basic engine, except it revs to 7000 and has a supercharger. Hell, my mother's Lexus RX has the EXACT same engine with different tuning and it redlines at 6500. They optimize the one in the Tacoma for durability and low(well, lower anyway) end torque. Cruising at 3500 rpm is doing nothing to hurt it.

Idk if all these people have only ever owned diesels and old school American V8s before they had Tacos but it's not like we're talking about crazy RPMs here. I had a 1998 BMW 318 with a 5 speed where 5th gear was 1:1, highway cruise was at 3,000+ no matter what.

With the tune, we have the limiter at 7,250. It was tested to 7,400.

You can do 4k all day with this mill.

To me it seems like 4th gear rpm's should be halfway between 3rd and 4th in stock form. 4th gear has plenty of power to pull on the flats and 3rd for the hill's the really steeps it does drop into second. Here is a rpm chart I did for my own truck on 285/75r16's. I go back and forth on ratio's especially after adding a Magnuson.

Slow and steady! The fix is not the truck, it’s its driver :anonymous: I had to say it. Your TT manual probably recommends no more than 65mph for good reason.

It clearly says 5th or lower, not lower than 5th.

Use when high levels of response and feeling are desirable, such as when driving in mountainous regions or when pulling a trailer.

Press the “ECT PWR” button to select power mode. Page 203.

    ECT on Check

    • Vehicles with an automatic transmission: To maintain engine brak- ing efficiency and charging system performance when using engine braking, do not use the transmission in D. If in the S mode, the transmission shift range position must be in 5 or lower. Page 186

So I stand corrected I missed a gear

ECT on S 5 or lower....Heavy trailer, I keep it in S4 since 5th gear is an overdrive gear in these transmissions and towing in overdrive is not recommended for any transmission.

It does, 5th is an overdrive gear, I tow in S 5 when I am pulling a kayak trailer, I do not tow in overdrive when towing anything over 2K especially when on hills.

You have to let this engine rev when pulling, it makes a lot of people nervous and they back off the pedal, and the result is poor towing or the truck struggles, if your really working it in the hills, its gonna rev...I stand corrected, its gotta rev or you may be doing more harm than good.

I don't disagree with your points, my only issue is if we are going to tell people to read the manual, we should at least be accurate when we quote it at them.

Grossly over rated with a HF trailer and tires that size hate to tell you that. Trucks fine though

A little bit. I've hauled a lot with it loaded more.

I do wish I had the heavier version, but it was a present from my wife. Served us well for 20yrs.
