What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

The majority of stuff on Amazon isn't counterfiet, and they have a great return policy if you get something you suspect, but I definitely understand the concern, and there's surely a lot of media coverage about the cases that are bad apples.

I was just giving an option, at any rate. Maybe I should refrain from doing so. At the end of the day, it's $63 delievered vs $83 delivered. A ~30% difference may be worth it for some.

It's a gamble, I bought an OEM MAF off ebay in the original box no less,

It was fake and had all the ear marks of an OEM, not a big deal, I return it for a full refund BUT if that was the water pump I'd be pissed because of the labor.
I ended just going to the dealership for the part.

 

I appreciate that feedback that you've had sucess with the Denso MAF. FWIW, I paid thew $83 at RockAuto. The Amazon one would have been $76, not $63.

 

Counterfeit parts are unfortunately ubiquitous on easy to scam marketplaces like Amazon, eBay, and FBMP. I stay away from them all now, too easy to fake the packaging and product casings now, hell i even see cleaned and re-boxed used parts when it comes to fuel injectors and the like these days. Not everyone is super adept and assumes parts that break again in a short period were just bad parts. Lately I've been seeing tons of fake NGK spark plugs (all Amazon purchases) and a couple fake Denso AFR/O2 sensors. I trust nothing coming from those marketplaces anymore, parts from real auto parts retailers are still far below OEM pricing if you need them.

 

I tried to buy parts from Rock Auto the other day but they won't ship to most of Colorado because they can't be bothered to abide by local tax laws.

Any suggestions for other good options?

 

Ah yeah, I heard about that, shame too. Weird law. Unfortunately no one else has quite the same spread of quality manufacturers. But you can get pretty close with Napa and AutoZone. And napa almost always has a 10% off deal for ordering online and picking up in a store. If you just want to order it all online and have it shipped to you advance Auto parts is really good if you don't have local chains of their store. In fact Napa and advanced have the biggest selection of oe manufacturers

 

Just make sure you order the correct one. Around 99 they combined the air temp sensor and MAF so it is 5 pin while the older version is 3 pin.

I think it depends on the part/s and the company that makes them. RA won't ship a lot of stuff to CA either because of the stupid cancer warning prop. If the company that makes the part hasn't jumped through the hoops or whatever to make it legal in the state you're shipping it to, RA won't ship it there.

I couldn't get an aftermarket unpainted fender shipped here from RockAuto because of it. They denied the sale. Had no issue with getting a sensor shipped though.

 

So I was greasing my OME leaf shackles and this happened...


Leaving for New Mexico at zero dark thirty tomorrow. How big of a worry is this and how do I get the threaded part out of the shackle?

 

Mines been snapped off for over a year, it happens all the time. Nothing to worry about mechanically, it's just a zerk fitting.

Easy to thread a new one in once you get the old broken piece out... Maybe try one of those bolt removal bits for when you snap a bolt. Still haven't tried to fix mine yet but you'll be fine for your trip

 

We’ve had a MASSIVE influx of counterfeit parts people have put on their cars coming into the dealer with issues. So far 2 sets of “denso” plugs have fallen apart and destroyed engines.

Amazon is fine for parts so long as you stay away from OEM. If you know it's generic and it works then it's a good deal.

I had originally wanted to replace the MPPT Solar Optimization Module with the Yeti Link and wire it directly into the battery but this seems to work out fine. The car charger has a 5A and a 10A selector. With the engine running, I placed it on the 10A setting.

While I'd like the 200w Boulder solar for when the vehicle is sitting, the 100w Nomad panels the yeti came with are good enough.

Still very satisfied with the Goal Zero. Had initially purchased this as a backup/portable for use around the house. Now instead of going with a second batt wired into the truck, I'm happy with this portable solution.





Still working up replacing the Big 3/4/5 (whatever we're calling it these days) with 2 gauge welding cable. Wire arrived this afternoon so it'll be a day or two. I had extra 4 gauge and simply replaced what I could a few days ago just to see if there was any difference. Didn't wire directly from ALT to POS terminal but will go that route with the 2 gauge. More to follow...

Also still working on ideas for some kind of partial divider/platform to accommodate one slide out drawer.

Created the bed platform for the camper. Used mostly wood slats, but added two aluminum ones where most of the load will be placed when getting into the bed and where most of the mass will be when sleeping. I wanted it this way so it could be collapsed somewhat out of the way when not in use to give more room in the bed of the truck.
