Hey Tacoma people. I thought they redesigned the DRL bulb from 2012 on up.
My bulb is shorter so it doesnt burn out the housing but its ultra hot.
My DRL intermittently work along with my turn signal that will sometimes flash fast but when I check the bulb its ok. Anyone experience anything like this?

Is it doing it on both sides?
If not, pull the plug inspect the socket, and switch the bulb to the other side.
If the problem goes to the other side, it’s the bulb.
If the problem stays on the same side, it’s likely a connection issues, or a flasher issue.
IIRC, the DRL go through the Flasher.

My bet is on a bad bulb (if it’s only on one side)
If it’s on both sides - a connection issue or the flasher.

At first it went out on the drivers side only, then I put the turn signal on and it blinked rapidly like the bulb was out. Then they all went out.
I pulled the bulb out on the drivers side and the socket was a little burnt looking but the passenger side was fine. But then I put the same bulb back in and then everything worked again. Ironically this all started when I drove up the Toyota dealership.

Something that helped me in my case was using an actual 4157NAK bulb. You can get them from the dealership or online.

Don't quote me on this, but I think the krypton helps the bulb operate at a lower temperature. Swapping the old bulbs for NAK's seems to have helped my issue

If the socket is burning then you have a loose connection causing the localized heating problem. That would also explain the rapid blinking because of the increased resistance.

So the left and right turn signal/running lights are on the same relay, in parallel? Thats why my passenger side is hot still.
I'm going to check the back of the socket. Its tight in there and that makes a lot of sense thanks, + grounded. I'v read a bunch of accounts here on TW with people experiencing the same thing, driver side dlr/turn signal duel filament. They sell a socket with wires I can install, same color wires. Its suspiciously looks like a faulty designed Toyota thing.

    Yes, essentially.
The relay is actually the Turn Signal. (Technically called the Turn Signal Flasher)
The Body ECU controls the DRL commands to the Flasher.

Don’t let the Body ECU part fool you.
The problem isn’t likely to be there.
Your problem is likely a connection or flasher issue.
I’m going with connection issues for now. Or bulb. Have you confirmed it doesn’t happen when switching bulbs?

Thanks. What Im wondering now is if this is how the truck was from the factory. Hot bulbs. Other then socket I cant think of another short in the system. But the socket makes sense as its a part that is being taken out and put back in to change bulbs.

I went to auto parts store and got the 4157NAK.

I think it’s just how the system was designed. As you and others mentioned, hot bulbs were an issue for the 2.0gen Tacos, so much so that there was a TSB issued.

I went through a few sets of bulbs trying to solve the same problem and the best fix to date has been using OEM Toyota 4157NAK bulbs. Krypton gas is much heavier than the typical Argon/Nitrogen mix used in most halogen bulbs, so it makes some sense that they may operate a bit cooler than other 4157 bulbs. Same concept behind xenon filled bulbs.

$0.02 of opinion and anecdotal evidence lol
