Now that everyone here has convinced me to go tall and thin over a wider tire but I'm not finding all terrain tires in 255 85 16. Is this due to any safety issues off-road or on the highway? Does anyone know if an all terrain on 255 85 16?

Go to Tire rack or discount tire direct website and search by size (255/85R16). You’ll come up with several offerings.

255/85/16 has simply never been a popular size and options are limited. Nothing wrong with it, just not popular.

A 4" lift is a bit tricky. The 255/85/16's are a 33" tire that can be made to work with a stock suspension. A 4" lift might look a little odd with that tire. Most guys who lift that much plan on much bigger 34" or 35" tires.

    4 run, 2 don't
Not to mention, a 4" lift would suck on any IFS vehicle. Those CV axles will be screaming.

255/86/16 offered by Toyo and Cooper.

Running Coopers now and got Toyo MT as a spare (will eventually turn into a full set).

He's just mess'in with you. I have 255/85r16's by BFG; however they are KM3's. I do believe that the all terrain KO2 is available in that size. No safety issue-wonderful tire even at an E rating. Love them. Falken makes a Wildpeak all terrain in that size. Maxxis makes the Bighorn.

Tire Rack has three (+ one trailer tire) in that size.... America's Tire (Discount) has five + one trailer tire. Not a great selection and maybe other retailers have a few more (?). As noted above, it's not a popular size.
My avatar truck is running that size in a discontinued Cooper Discoverer S/T which is a bit taller and slightly more aggressive than Cooper's Discoverer S/T Maxx.

Bff only makes the km3 I'm that size. I'm running K02's now in 265 75 16 but want a little bigger tire. I need something that can handle off-road in Colorado and the km3's could work. How is the road noise?

    Okay.

Summit Racing carries MasterCraft which is probably the closest you might get to an A/T.

KM3's arent going to be quiet, but a monster offroad.

I'd lean towards STT's personally. but the KM3 is a really decent offroading tires.

All those tires will be louder on the highway, and will feel less planted on the road.

I love the idea of pizza cutters but I'd prefer an all terrain as well, simply due to daily driving.

Cooper ST Maxx and Falken Wildpeak are both all terrain tires. The various mud terrains are too, of course. My experience with the 255/80R17 Cooper ST Maxx is that the road noise isn't any louder than it was with 265/70R17 Duratracs.

There are several ATs in 255/85r16. Cooper and Toyo as mentioned, Dick Cepek as well as some lesser known brands.

BFG and Yokohama make some MTs in that size as well.

Traditionally that size tire is used on trailers, when I ordered my STMaxx for my truck the tire shop kept reminding me of that and saying they wouldn't fit my truck.

    tenor.jpg

But that's probably why there aren't too many options in the AT range, though I think they're becoming more popular with the 4x4 crowd
