Fuel filler door rubbing

does anybody have a problem with their fuel filler door rubbing against the inside when it is open approx. 90 deg. to the sidebody/fender? If so please recommend how to fix it. I'm thinking about drilling out the rivets and shimming it out maybe 1mm or so. Is this a common problem or has mine been tweaked?

 

Mine rubs ever so slightly. I don't think it's worth removing and reinstalling after re-drilling holes. I say live with it.

 

I opened mine up and pulled it straight out by hand..fixed the rubbing although it wont stay open by itself now

 

Mine was bent one day. Not sure how, but maybe some kids who knows. I noticed when it opened it stopped halfway and was contacting on the edge near front of truck. It took the paint off. I noticed the lower hinge had crumpled paint so it got bent inwards. I used a large screwdriver and towel under it to pry it back out. I then cleaned and touched up with paint. The odd part was when closed it was flush with bed so I'm not sure how it was that off.

 

I noticed that mine rubbed on the paint. I told the dealer, and they touched up the paint, and bent the inside part of the door. The tolerance seems way too close to me. They should have given it a little more room.

 

Same thing happened to mine. Dealer touched up the paint and adjusted the door (probably just bent it). I probably could have bent it myself but it was under warranty and no sense in me attempting and breaking something.

 

Mine rubs as well! The paint hasn't worn yet, but I'm keeping an eye on it and opening very carefully!

 

Sorry about no picture, not quite TW literate yet. Anyway, is there a quick and dirty fix to seal the paint as mine has rubbed off already. I live in salty michigan so I should act quickly..... Thanks for the quick responses..

 

You can get touch-up paint from the dealer. It's a perfect match and is very cheap. I applied some to cover up a rock chip.

 

I have the same problem, not really worried about the paint being worn off as you never see it, When I have some time though I do need to bend the bottom hinge back out and touch it up to prevent corrosion. I agree, its not bent much, hardly noticeable , the tolerances for the fuel door are way too tight.

 

Mine does not touch at all, not even close....
wonder if they made some extra clearance on the 09?

 

I doubt it as mine has plenty of clearance too ('05). But maybe these guys' doors/hinges are getting tweaked because they're not lubricating them regularly? If you don't keep them lubricated, the hinges will snap. So maybe this is the precursor to that? (not saying that's the case, just a thought/idea on a possible reason for it happening)

I'd like to see pics of these tight-fitting doors to compare with mine.

 

My cover has rubbed off the paint on the bottom left corner and the door actually slides off one of the clips in order to open it enough to insert gas pump. Seems like it doesn't open nearly as much as it should, the lower bend of the hinge rod thing is hitting on the part that is riveted to the truck and keeping it from opening farther. I keep meaning to pry at it with a screwdriver but only think of it when getting gas. Have any of you guys had success with prying at it or have you just ignored it?

 

I have never even thought to lubricate the fuel filler door, but it makes sense since it is a hinge. I will try to take a pic and post.

 

The hinge could be going bad, especially in the rust belt. I had to replace my hinge a year ago. top was rusted so bad that it broke. I bought a new door assembly from a dealership and carefully pried the hinge off and put my original painted door on. Door and hinge cost around $35

 

Keep a can of lithium in the cab and give the hinges a spray every few fill-ups. I use it for my clutch pedal too. They actually do this at some dealers when you service it.

A screw driver with a cloth over the tip worked great to bend the hinge back into place. Just make sure you touch it up where the pain is cracked or it will rust quickly.

 

The hinges on the 2011 I have "WERE" quite small. In 2014 the door started rubbing and lately it could only be opened about 1/2 way if I was careful. Well, the gas bar people fixed that soon enough,both upper and lower hinge broke off and the door then hung on the plastic tie strap to the filler cap. When I looked at the hinges closely I found them to be totally rusted and that despite the fabulous Toyota regular service which "in writing" includes LUBRICATION OF All HINGES. As a protest I was going to start driving around with the door tied shut with bright yellow tape, but decided instead to fix it myself. I bent up two 10mm alum strips and sheet-metal-screwed them on to the existing vertical bracket. The door now works better than before and only very close scrutiny reveals a little skew. Later I looked at a Ford fuel door and although it requires no rocket science they do have "a better idea".

 

My hinge just went. And I have rub marks on the lower left of the door

$97, dirt cheap, especially if they do it on their bill.
