We have a woman at work that always cooks this foul smelling fish meal for lunch at least 2x a week, it stinks up the entire building as well. God forbid you use the same microwave she used after cooking it, your food is ruined

There's a huge lake out in the middle of the CA desert called the Salton Sea, it's incredibly shallow but enormous in size. Filled with mostly agricultural runoff from over the years due to surrounding date farms and other agriculture. The water is so toxic the only fish that can somewhat survive in it are Tilapia, but the shoreline around the entire lake is filled with bones and rotting bodies of them. You can smell the lake from Palm Springs many miles away if the wind goes the right direction.

After being there several times (photographed my college grad show there) I never want to see a tilapia again for as long as I live.

There are a few ghost towns around the lake though that were almost completely abandoned decades ago when the lake went sour, its a cool place to explore if you can stand the smell.

We went out there a couple times in July 2011, it was....like being on the surface of the sun and smelling death all around you.

There's a big push that's been happening in recent years to save the Salton Sea, its predicted that if the sea completely dries up that Palm Springs and all the other desert communities, including Los Angeles to some degree, could get be affected by all the toxic chemicals that get blown into the air from it being dried up. So apparently they're trying to figure out a way to keep it full.

I guess it's also along a lot of migratory paths for birds that rely on it or something like that.

The abandoned buildings, hotels, casinos, gas stations and homes are cool to wander around. Probably wouldn't do it at night though, desert tweakers and all.

What a horrible experiment from the 50s, there is another neato one getting closer to Nevada where someone tried to start a whole town and ultimately failed, but it has named roads and housing plots.

So I'm not 100% sure here, but the only other thread I can find with more pages than this one (which has had many pages worth of content removed over the years) is the TW live thread (that typically has the whole forum contributing) at ~19K pages of postings. We aren't too far off on that really.

yeah and it's got about 10k people that live there, I guess it is still a town in a way. Just not the huge booming city that it was originally planned out to be, so a lot of the development areas are empty

I love being short staffed. Ran 150 feet of 1.5" conduit today by myself. In a non air-conditioned building with 75% humidity. Was drenched in sweat by 8:30 this morning. Thankfully help showed up when it was time to pull three pieces of 2ga and one 6ga wire through it, which was an absolute pain in the ass.

At least Ill have the keys to my house this time tomorrow. :)

Gonna put in a solid 50 hours this week to make up for holiday.

Wish it was 10 hours of time and a half, but oh well.
