Crazy how ingrained ideas become. But that one fuel pump thread was pretty illuminating. I can't remember the name of it though

Test it out. Carry a jerrycan with spare fuel. Reset odometer when you hit empty.

Lots of bad things can happen if you let the tank get that low. Once you're down to the last 2-3 gallons all of the gas will flow to one end of the tank and may not get picked up by the fuel pump if you're going up or down hills.

A couple of years ago I was less than 10 miles from home, less than 5 miles from a fuel stop when traffic was stopped due to a construction accident that had broken a gas line running alongside the road. I was stranded with the engine running to keep the AC on for over 30 minutes before I was able to get turned around.

Instead of a short 10 mile ride home with multiple places to stop for fuel I had to backtrack and take multiple backroads to get home. Over 50 miles with no fuel stops in between. If I'd been pushing my luck with a near empty tank when that happened I'd have run out of gas.

Many times I have been at the gas station with “please refuel” sign that appears after you have “zero miles” left at cluster. Around 10 times in 2 years of ownership. All good here. I trust my fuel gauge.

Why find out? you take a chance every time of hurting your fuel pump...let alone frying it.
