TRD/ Magnuson 4.0 Supercharger Tips, Tricks, and Mods

MY buddy had an auto crane, that made lifting the bumper and bed off a lot easier.

 

Double cab short bed you have to drop the tank anyways. Can’t get to the fuel pump by pulling the bed. It’s under the cab.

 

take the bed off. I partly dropped my tank and being able to see the top and make sure the gasket is seated is a thing. mine wasn't and ending up spilling a ton of fuel and then had to deal with a leaking full tank. not fun.

 

I dropped the tank when I did mine. Not that bad. Worst part is getting all the connector's undone.

That's what I thought reading some threads, but wasn't sure since so many people say pull the bed.

 

I second this. I just pulled my fuel pump out twice and the tank will have to be dropped.
(Well not "just" but within a couple months lol)

 

I ran the trigger wire for the pump relay into the cab to a wire on the fuse box. Pump comes on any time the ignition is on.

I did this because the week after I installed the supercharger, we took a week long trip to Disney and I came back home to a dead battery. The EFI fuse gets powered up periodically so the leak detection pump can run. So that means while you are sleeping your intercooler pump runs periodically. Not the smartest idea.

 

I’ve tried more exhaust setups than I can remember. @Roostfactor knows this first hand since he was doing the welding on many of them.

Exhaust sound is subjective. For me, it didn’t matter where or how many resonators, cats or mufflers I tried it was too loud for my liking.

I’m now running URD headers with stock Y and stock exhaust. It sounds perfect. I probably lost some leak power, but I just don’t drive the truck like that anyway. It was fun chasing the ponies, but my ears are much happier now.

Yep, I installed a battery voltage logger. You can see when the battery is being fed by the alternator and when the truck is off. Where off those low points in the plot are the supercharger pump cycling on causing draw on the battery. The unnecessary draw always bothered me.

 

Well, my discovery did not involve data loggers, oscilloscopes or other such wizardry. My situation was a bit more rudimentary. I was hanging in the garage sipping whiskey late one night and the damned thing scared the shit out of me when the pump started running.

 

That stupid thing has scared me more than my share of times when I've either been working on it or have been close to it. Every time that happens it's gets a thorough swearing at (because it's totally abnormal for a car guy to swear at inanimate objects) and then I continue on with my life.

 

Thankfully I didn’t spill my beverage. After that discovery, I fixed the problem for good. Can’t risk wasting good whiskey.

yea, its been a hot minute, forgot about that nonsense, which is why I dropped the tank.

Take home lesson of the day: Drop the tank, do the deed, use something to lift/hold the tupperware® fuel tank while reattaching the hoses. I used a Harbor Freight table lift without the handle in the upright and locked position per FAA regulations.

 

No take home lesson is don’t do fuel pump work on a full tank. Run that bitch dry

 

LPT: Don't drop your truck off for work with 3/4 tank when its getting a new tank (mechanics LOVE this) Oh, and the first thing that happens is supercharger, so I doubt @81Trekker had any problems taking care of that.

 

I discovered it the old fashion way as well. But with the data logger (installed for a different purpose) I thought it was interesting to see the frequency on which those runs occur. It was far more often than I expected.

 

I've heard my inverter running while the truck was parked after being off for hours. Get in the truck, turn key to on, inverter light on dash is off. Turn ignition to off, noise stops. Farking weird.

Every vehicle needs a battery disconnect switch inside the cab when parking a vehicle, would be so much safer, no more vampire drain on the batt...no need for trickle chargers, etc. Hide it and use it as a kill switch.
