    @Jowett

    Do you see a way to do any modifications that would improve on this situation?

    I spent a lot of time and effort on this truck....put in a front locker, changed the gears and armored it/improved the clearances to suit my needs. This truck spends most of it's time on the trails and this has kinda damaged my trust in it.

    While I'm hoping the catch can does indeed work as my fellow TWers have stated, I'm curious about any other modifications that could be done to alleviate this situation.

    I did Kane Creek trail in Moab this pass week, a few times where I had to winch up steep rock formations and no smoke.

    I ordered mine from Rogue Offroad, they shipped to CA, but that was last year.

    The catch can alone should give most of the required protection. I'm digging deeper into the valve cover in an attempt to see if it can be improved.

    It's fine in Wisconsin. If I had to guess, I'd say in California, they'd fail you if they saw it because it's a modification

    Not too many 3rd gens with this are old enough to be smogged. I haven't been tested yet.

    It will not pass. Any modification past the air intake box will cause you to fail smog.
    I run a catch can on my truck, but take it off and plumb the PCV valve back to the intake like as stock when It's time to get smogged.

    It’s not “carb” legal so it will fail the visual but when I did smog on my 2020 I bought in another state they only plugged in the obd2 port , no sniffer of visual. I have the catch can and afe no carb intake and the kdmax tune tomorrow, can’t let them take my fun with how much the make off my taxes lol

    Totally agree, just planning for the future. I have a 2018 that is turning 4 YO this Dec. Still a ways to go, but who knows when CA will change their laws for the worse.

    I plan to remove and reconnect the tube somehow. I am curious if a smog tester would even notice it.

    I plan on doing the same once I do this mod. From what I've seen some testers are more thorough than others. I've been going to one particular shop for years and have never had a problem with the guy looking too deep into anything. Another time I was selling a bone-stock Corolla and needed to get it smogged for the sale. I wasn't near the place I normally go so I went to some random shop in another city. That guy went over that car with a fine-tooth comb, almost like he was trying to find some reason to fail the car. After 45 minutes of this I asked why he was looking so hard to find something wrong and I was basically told that he thought I was trying to hide something on the car.

    Installed the cc and took the taco out today. Did the same hill and no smoking. Let it sit and idle at the incline for about 5 min.

    Got back home and was shocked to see the cc about 3/5 full. Wondering if that’s related to time in the inclined position and that if held in that position long enough, it would fill up.
