What did you use for fill material on top of the drain rock and filter fabric?

Is it just dirt - 8" at time, compacted?

    That's a lot of rock!

What benefits/reasons do you use rock instead of dirt? I'm used to seeing up to 12" of rock under a slab foundation, but never 4'. I assume it is because of the climate?

It's 8" of drain rock (no fines) at bottom for a drainage layer , filter fabric , then 24" of crushed pit run which is crushed rock to 3/4" with all the fines smaller than that so it is compact-able , the soil on site is clay , no good for our infill

plumber still needs to trench for his under slab work after we are done so this is good material for him too

I'm in a suburb of Vancouver and the community is called Clayton Heights. I assumed it was after the developer, until we went to dig a couple Koi ponds in the backyard..... definitely a inspiration for the name... :frusty:

Clay in Fargo, too. Not surprising when you know we were at the bottom of an ancient lake.

I'm from Georgia - that red clay down there sucks.

At least the clay makes for easy water retention. Wouldnt need a liner or do you have one?

You can see ours over to the right. ~15x15 and 3.5ft deep or so at the deepest

Some flags and center console divider... lots of things on the wanted list.
We have been looking at all of them lately. Trying to find one that doesn't sound like a screeching eagle going for the kills when it locks/unlocks.

Looking at lockly right now. But we are still in between options.

We could probably get away without one but we had one and honestly it keeps the water clarity that much better with it. They aren't anywhere near that size, we just put two in, the largest is probably 10 x 6 in a kidney bean shape about 40" deep, with a waterfall/babbling brook feature down to a smaller pond about 3 x5" which has the pump circulating the water back up top. Between the Heron, various hawks and raccoons I don't think having the Koi are worth it. Smaller goldfish sure, they can hide easier, but the 18"+ Koi are easy pickings in a pond our size.

We need to get ours filtered a bit more. Its dirty but its the first year weve had it at this house (freshly dug last fall when we bought the place). We had about your size at the old house that we filled in.

We have a net on ours. Hawks/owls/heron all come down to visit our yard also.
