So it turns out there is this place here in San Antonio called diesel toys… they do D-4D engine swaps on Toyota’s… I was looking into buying a 3rd gen but I now think I’m going to make my unicorn taco a unicorn taco equipped with hens teeth…

they are booked out 12-14 months… once I get the bank to approve financing I’m pulling the trigger…

30-35mpg with about 200hp and all the low end torque I would ever need sounds extremely sexy… especially for doing overland trips…

    no way I’m getting a 3rd gen now… lol

I like the idea of a diesel in a Taco but investing $30,000 in a 10 year old truck, no way. You’ll never get your $$$ out of it when you go to sell it. Don’t misunderstand me I’m not criticizing you, if that’s what you really want to do go for it. I’m just curious why exactly do you want to do this? What are you going to use the truck for that makes it worth spending $30,000?
Definitely want to see some pics of it.

Takes decades of gas to justify the gas mileage as a main reason. Cool factor is high though. I’d just LS swap it for 1/3 the cost and be happier in the long run.

Main reason why I want it is because I want a diesel 4x4 but Toyota ain’t never gonna jump on that bandwagon from the looks of it. I’ve had this truck since I was 20. I met my wife in that truck. The thought of selling it KILLS me. I’d rather spend $30k getting EXACTLY what I want than spend $30k settling for something new.

I always planned on keeping this truck, only recently entertained the idea of trading it in for a new taco, always planned on diesel swapping it, but when I found out there is a Toyota diesel swap authority in my city, my mind was immediately set.

don’t care about the cost as long as I get what I want.

I have more plans for this truck in the future. My dream vehicle is an access cab short bed diesel 4x4 taco… might not ever do the access cab short bed conversion but that’s my goal for the next decade with this truck. It’s been beat up and needs body work, so I feel like it’s the perfect candidate for a project vehicle at this point. Im about to redo the dash this year and add new seats to it. Also planning on doing a touch screen entertainment system for it.

just to give you an idea, I’ve spent the last decade dreaming up these plans. I’ve always wanted to own a one off, custom truck that literally nobody else has. I’d rather have the aforementioned custom Tacoma than a damn lambo or Ferrari or anything else. So if I wind up spending $100k on my Tacoma over the next decade, I won’t feel like I wasted my money. I have odd tastes and like unique things.

I’m going to real estate school and working as an auto parts delivery driver at the moment. I drive my Tacoma 300 miles a day. My Tacoma is extremely underpowered, struggles on hills, and gets terrible mileage for a 4banger. That being said, it’s been a beast off road. I recently pulled a loaded up uHaul out of some mud on the side of the road with it. My truck is capable, but doesn’t excel at any one thing OTHER than being able to off-road extremely well. It’s literally completely stock except for the wheels. It will get a suspension lift in the future, but I’m probably going to wait until I get the diesel swap done.

Might seem like a total waste of money to some people, but if it gets me what I want and brings me joy, it’s money we’ll spent in my book.

I don’t want the gas mileage for $$$ reasons as much as I want the extended range… they even do expanded tanks and secondary fuel tanks. The idea of being able to do long range road trips/overland trips makes me giddy.

Yeah best of luck but I can't see how any bank will loan you this kind of money for a vehicle customization. Maybe get a HELOC or something. Following.

This is the type thing that if you can’t pay cash for it you probably shouldn’t do it in general though
