Shows how bad the lakes are now. Most of that should be under water.

So I worked on two cars today. A 2016 Jeep Patriot and a 2012 Ford Escape. I hate both of these vehicles.

Was asked to recharge the AC in the 2012 Escape. Pulled the low pressure port cap and a loud hiss of escaping refrigerant came out with some UV dye. Told the guy I didn’t even want to put my gauges on it or recharge it since it was obviously leaking in two spots on further inspection. Then I noticed that his coolant reservoir was empty and the radiator plastic tank was splitting. One CV axle boot was on its way out and his battery terminals were spinning with the clamps. Dude wasn’t interested in anything but his AC working.

Second guy had a broken latch mechanism for his rear hatch. Once I swapped the latch and cable I realized the body of his car was bent where the striker sits. I asked him about it and he said he had used the striker plate to attach a tow strap and pull someone’s car that was broken down on the highway. So I stacked multiple quarters under it and told him he should’ve mentioned that to me sooner. He had broken the latch by repeatedly slamming the hatch shut onto a misaligned striker plate. Insanity.

Some people just don't do mechanical stuff, or even have an understanding of how important it can be. Makes a lot of money for some people

I only made $100 today since the Escape dude declined any real work. After a 9 hour day I wonder sometimes if my sanity and free time are worth doing jobs like this.

I also feel like an imposter charging for the work since I'm not a mechanic. But at this point I'm doing more quality work than a lot of the shops in town. Ignoring the quarter stacking I did today.

Give yourself more credit, you're a mechanic, you're just not ASE certified. My boss tells me "A professional is just someone who can charge money for his skills"

Right now I'm working for the Texas Department of Transportation doing IT. My degree was Management Information Systems with a Computer Science minor.

True. And in reality I'm not even certified for my current job in IT. I'll need a couple different certificates if I want to move out of my current tier 2 customer support situation.

I’m putting in 10 extra hours this week, but no over time, which fine, my hourly is basically over time compared to the rest of my working career.

And I think I pretty much have the office to myself today, so that’s neat.
