Wow, I'd be pissed, too. But this is the best and simplest idea I have seen here to remedy the situation.

BTW, it is very likely the truck is fine. I had a hose blow to the remote mounted filter on my Chevy S-10 dumping all the oil onto I-70. I was in a snowstorm in rush hour stop and go. It was an old truck and because of the conditions I kept going for 20 minutes (slow stop and go) to my destination. Next day I fixed the line and refilled with oil and drove the truck another 2 years before I traded it. IOW, it was fine.

Had a similar situation with a quick change oil a long time ago. The technician didn't have the filter size in stock so he put one on that he thought would work. Well, 20 miles later, it fell off while my wife was driving. Needed a new engine because she was miles from anywhere. She drove about 5 miles with no attached oil filter I would guess.

Anyhoo, new engine, law suit, insurance. I told her to never go to a quick change place again.

I wouldnt want the extended warranty no matter how many miles. I don't want to take the chance that I'll seize up somewhere inconvenient, such as on an icy hill while climbing, etc, where it would endanger my life. Like someone said "if it was a plane would you take it in the air knowing what you do?"

Wrong, when you are not considered to be an expert in the field, him continuing to drive does not fall under negligence statutes. He "unknowingly" drove with the light on not knowing the consequences.

Refer to above; he is not an expert in the field therefore can't be held liable for implied consequences that are not known by the common person. Granted most everyone on TW knows the consequences of driving without oil, there are so many sensors in today's vehicles that driving with this one on would not leave the burden of proof on the claimant.

True, no plane would be allowed to fly without a thorough inspection by a certified mechanic and without FAA's approval. No, I would stear clear of buying this vehicle.

Yes is all I have to say to that.

I'm not going to post the dealership name unless they refuse to fix or replace the truck. Extending the warranty doesn't really fix it unless it was an unlimited 20 year warranty on the engine and even then I will be faced with a possibly ruined vacation, missed work, towing ect I'm waiting on responses to emails from Toyota Canada and the dealership. If they refuse to do anything it will be an all out war. I will keep updating this thread when they respond.

There may be absolutely nothing wrong, but are you the one who wants to chance it? I wouldn't, I bought the vehicle with it expected and implied to last so long. Not all trucks last the same because of different affecting factors, but this is a pretty big factor that may or may not have done any damage. Whether it will or won't, would any of you volunteer to drive your truck any distance without oil? Maybe not a new engine, but some sort of warranty that will cover you for problems related to the engine for your determined period of time within reason. I would think that if you were covered to about 125,000-150,000, that would be sufficient.

He said he knew the light was on, so he was as 'expert' as he is needed to be. At that point any owner is obligated to exercise due diligence..that means pull over as soon as it's safe and have it towed. Not continue to drive it for at least one kilometer back to the dealer. My second post wasn't meant to apply to OP since OP states he DID see the lamp.

I understand it took a kilometer for it to light...or for him to notice it...and that he had to get to a safe spot to pull over. I'm not trying to poke at OP, just make sure he understands the position they can take against him.

I wouldn't trust the dealership ever touching m,y truck again. This is why I don't like letting anyone else touch my shit.

Do you pull over when your TPMS light comes on? He, nor most people do not know what the lights mean without looking it up in your manual. Since he was so close to the dealership he just turned back around to let them look at it. Seeing the light and driving with it on in no way makes him an expert on his truck or engine.

TPMS isn't the same and yes I do...I get out and take a look around to make sure one isn't almost flat.

If someone is too much of an idiot to know what an idiot light means what does that make him? Not that that would apply to OP...he had to know what it meant 'cause he knew enough to go back to the dealer.

I know its not the same and you know its not the same, but there are probably a vast majority that think, "Oh great there is a light on, I better drive to the closest place to find out what it means." Whether someone is an idiot or professor at Yale, unless they are deemed to be well schooled in the subject, they are not held liable for their lack of knowledge or stupidity (unless) it can be proven the manufacturer did everything within its power to educate people. For instance, cigarettes, 99% of the people out there know they are not good for you, yet the tobacco companies where deemed responsible until they put on the box, "these will kill you", and yet they are still found at fault at times because the genral public is not considered to be educated or experts in the medical fields.

the damage could be done as soon as you fire the engine up without the oil. just because the light comes on doesnt mean you're "getting close" to damage. all the computer knows is that it isn't seeing a set criteria of conditions in order to remain unlit, and despite there being zero oil in the engine it still had to take a certain amount of time to diagnose that (which in this case was 1km).

plenty of damage can occur before the light is activated it has no idea if the cylinders are already damaged. if i didnt get a new engine i would damned sure want to see a spec for spec comparison to a new one that assures me there was no detectable damage.

    .

I do my own oil ... but my wife takes her Honda to the Honda dealership.

When I take it in .. I do a walk around and note any damage to service writer.

When I pick it up, I do the do the same thing and I also check the dipstick.

Years ago, a mechanic screwed up an oil change on a Cessna 172 and we were lucky to make it to a small strip in rural Alabama on an early Sunday morning. ...

And I have had dealers and quick change oil places screw up too ... so I note & check EVERYTHING on the service order now ... :D

Now THAT is major f'd up. Don't mechanics have to have an A&P ticket to service airplanes? Can you not do your own?

The mechanic screwed up and I was riding in a friend's 172 and assumed that he (plane owner & pilot) checked it out in a pre-flight ... last time I ever rode with him too.

FWIW ... I double check everything now and I make my wife crazy  because now I double & triple check the door locks all the way down to the dryer lint filter ...
