I don't I've seen you in a while. My truck is entirely different from the last time you saw it at this point.

LOL since CVT gives a 15% TW discount, and maybe they'd do 20% for Black Friday instead it was an easy decision to have it for this summer's season.

 

I've been following the mobtown thread.....you getting the HC bumper soon?

 

Hope so! On Monday of this week Joe got back to me and agreed to ship the bumper bare. There's a PC shop locally that says they're about a week out on jobs that size. So I feel like there might be some light at the end of the tunnel.

 

Alright guys, looking for one last piece of advice. I ordered a set of tent mounting feet from Prinsu, which would raise the tent up high enough to give clearance between the tent and the rack on the cab. But the more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to chop the cab rack in half, and rest the tent directly on the cross bars on the cap. This would give me the clearance I need for bed flex, while also improving my chances of fitting into the garage (I'm almost positive it won't fit using the feet, but I won't know for sure until I remove the current tent and actually have the feet in hand, and take accurate measurements. It will be a close call for sure). The rack space under the front part of the tent would be wasted real estate anyway.

Aside from the obvious of not being able to go back to a full size rack, is there anything I'm not taking into consideration?

 

Many of us appreciate a full size rack, but smaller racks are fine as well.

But seriously, I'm a fan of "simpler is better." Fewer attachment points and lowering the tent reduces your height, lowers your CG, as well as decreases the leverage the dynamic load will have on the mounts and rack. Probably minimally, but the difference of being able to get into the garage or not is also important. And, if that part of the cab rack can't be used anyway, why would you need it? My only thought would be what you already mentioned. If you decide to change things down the road, or sell the truck without the tent, you might regret chopping the rack down.

Just make sure your measurements are accurate. It would suck to chop the rack and realize you still don't have enough clearance.

But yeah, everything you said I've also thought about. I can't think of any drawback to doing the chop assuming I don't need tochange iterations again, because this is obviously the last time I'm changing things up, and I've never said that before!

I would make sure to measure correct, but I'd prob end up chopping right after the middle mounting point, just like the Habitat rack Prinsu sells.

 

What about just selling the rack? What do you plan on keeping on a tiny rack?

 

Thought of that too. But where would I keep all my cool overland accessories?

Seriously though, that is a good consideration. The traction boards are going to get moved to my swingout when it comes in, and I think the fuel will probably go back there too. Or anywhere else, I think I'm done with Rotopax and going to try and get a NATO can, and I rarely carry extra fuel anyway. Only other thing up there is my storage case, which is where I keep my recovery gear. My plan was to keep that on the small rack and run it L-->R on the front. Those items are the only reason to keep the rack but I can try and come with an alternative to that too.

 

IMO it would be worth it to just sell it and come up with a different solution. You can get like $600 extra in your pocket or keep recovery gear on the roof instead of in the bed.

 

Yeah you're not wrong! Now in that case I could also put it on the cab and not be on the cap and never worry about destroying my fiberglass cap and just sell that rack instead.

But I'm just thinking out loud at this point, I'll come up with something. Grateful for all the ideas and brains to bounce ideas off.

 

It can also be an excuse to do some soul searching on what you really need to carry. I went through so many phases of the build and one was carrying fuel. I found that I literally never needed it, or even close, so I stopped carrying that. I used to have plano cases up top with recovery gear in one and spare parts in the other. Now, I have my most used recovery gear in this bin that covers 95% of recoveries. The few other odds and ends are with my spare parts in a tote in the bed. The recovery gear is now easily accessible and I can carry it with me when I walk up the trail to go hook to a tree or whatever.

Just all things to think about. I noticed a decent difference in getting weight off of my roof. Every little bit helps.

 

You're so right. I've never needed the fuel either. I only carried it on extended road trips, and never even came close to needing it. Only time I would actually see needing it is up in the North Maine Woods, and I go up there once every few years so I could just throw five gallons in the bed for those cases.

Otherwise, I think i'll take everything off the roof, install the tent on the cap without using feet, and rethink the storage for my recovery gear. All the doo-dads I've got up there, just like you I only actually use the tree saver, shackle, and maybe snatch block. Most everything else is always untouched.

 

I don't know the height of your racks or your garage door, but my standard height garage door gives me about 2" max clearance with the RTT on my bed rack. The bed rack sits about 6" below roof height so I'm skeptical if you'll be able to fit with you RTT up that high.

I would agree with this.

While I love the look of a roof rack, I just can't justify getting one because putting stuff up there is much more of a hassle than throwing it in my bed.

 

Don't get me wrong, roof racks have their place. Heck, I have one. It just seems like littlefish would be better off selling it as-is vs chopping it up.

 

The first house I owned back in TX was lived in by the builder initially, and he built the garage opening taller (like an extra door panel higher) and longer, probably so his work truck would fit in there with ladders and stuff. I never thought about it much, just thought that it was standard size. Last 2 houses are truly standard size and I barely clear with no lift and a mid-height rack. I guess sometimes it is true, everything is bigger in TX.

 

No doubt they have their uses. I just can't do it personally lol.

Agreed though that he should sell it, or else risk being stuck with a rack he'll barely use and/or won't be able to offload. More funds for more mods

 

A friend raised the height of the his garage door. Fixed his problem.

 

If I don't use the mounting feet it will fit. I measured numerous times. My curretn soft shell doesn't clear by ~4".

Thought of that. Still cheaper and more fun to buy the hardshell and sell the soft shell.
