the debateable +2 kit. What woudl be the minimum you would do for the rear. For my use, I likely will stay SOA due to weight and how I use it, and against my better thoughts (although very sound feedback from folks) I went 12" rear instead of 14". What's a good match for the +2 kit. Are there are SUA kits that are good for weight? I like to go fast but I know it's not always going to be pre-runner speeds. Covid is making me rethink all my stuff. Too deep to go to a JD fab kit for now although I was considering that or event a 3.5 but settled with 2 for now. if i want more ill build a second truck later down the road.

I’m not sure how much weight you’re runnin but you might want to look into a spring under kit that uses the factory pivots. I used deaver u539/540 which is the HD pack with the archive garage set up. While it does great when loaded up. Hell I have even towed with it and had minimal sag. It’s too stiff for my liking as I’m mostly unloaded. It was a world difference from the soa packs I had tried before. Or total chaos spring under. I didn’t have a front kit, I started with the rear. Just a tuned set of front coil overs on stock width. Since going with a +4 kit, I’ll be redoing the rear with something to better keep up with the front.

Regardless what you end up choosing, chase the tune for the shocks.

I hear you there. Currently, the truck is HEAVY and a custom Deaver pack is in its future under or over for sure. I was planning a custom SOA and currently have 12" bypasses in the rear. Was able to get a +2 kit almost right away and new king coils for the front. Was going to get a pre-tune on them or considering having accutune order a new set to take advantage of tuning services. I am still learning valving and no spring compressor but the cost of having new ones reworked was half the price of a new set but the wait times is why i picked up this set.

current plan was going to be +2 TC Expo, 12" rear (but thinking 14") but I really like the idea of 16" SUA after seeing @Airdog do it on his Stock Length. The current setup is bypassed stock width TC setup upfront that has had some tuning. I will be adding the JD fab LCA mounts, archive rear hangars, brace I'm sure other stuff it never ends.

The problem with staying soa is the lack of up travel. Even with bypass shocks you are going to constantly be in the bump zone. Without going through the bed I would say there isn’t much need to go with a longer than stock leaf, so doing the archive hangers or similar will help with rigidity. Then you just need to figure out what sort of travel you are going to get out of the leafs and shackles. Pick your shock length off of that either 12” or 14” to keep them out of the bed. And order springs set for spring under and your weight. Spring under can handle weight, just need the appropriate springs.

At the end of the day, you have to figure out what you want out of the truck and how you realistically use it. Are you trying to build more of an expo rig that is extremely capable or trying to bomb whoops in the desert? For me, the answer changes per the application.

Typically HEAVY trucks aren't trying to do the latter, so I'd probably lean towards sticking with SOA, adding the hangers, and some hydro bumps to the rear, and focus on tuning. It's your money and time though. How do you want us to spend it?

Can actually carry heavy loads, get all the uptravels, smooth ride, and easily adjustable ride height to compensate for camping weights and DD empty weights.

yah when I did the relocate and all that I was going to just go all in on mid travel but happened to come across a new +2 kit with no wait so naturally plans changed and now has me re thinking rear stuff as the 12" setup was great mid-travel but may not be enough for the new front setup but if its that more worth it to go 14" being SOA as it will be limited on up travel as you pointed out. That was a big factor I decide against and a bit part from your feedback @desertjunkie760

Would have been great but already have all of it sitting in the garage just need to get around to putting them on. Prob going to do that and the Stoptech BBK kit at the same time.

Agree 100%, it being one of those changes 100x over the past few years. It is def more of an expo rig but I like to drive fast so its a mixed bag of tricks and driven less mall and more go and whatever. I know I can't have it all but a blend of trails and moderate go fast works for this one. This is partially why I put off SUA. I have the hangars, crossbar will add a crossbar to the shock towers too. I have hydro bumps already with that in mind.

Tuning for sure will be the biggest factor but trying to re work the base platform since I drive it like pre runner but use it more like a expo rig ha

ha interesting take. Maybe down the line. fab and cost wise that's prob not on the cards right now. Once I figure out this welding thing its all downhill from there. Having to bring the truck places and be gone for periods of time keeps me from some stuff for sure. Finally picked up a welder but haven't had time to dig into it yet let alone install the pile of stuff in the garage.

I'm planning to do exactly this... for exactly those reasons; but I'll experiment with Air and a coil spring, no coilover, I don't see why it can't be done this way for a mild mixed duty rig.

I guess new Raptors and Tundras are basically doing this tho?

Everyone's definition of "go fast" is different so it's hard to really drive the conversation. Don't you have a GFC?

A well tuned relocation can do some damage but the obvious downfall is the limited up travel. All depends on your expectations.

    buy once, cry once.

As someone who did a massive spring project and is now getting ready to do links, I wish I'd just committed to links in the first place.

I hear ya. We shall see. I feel if I go down that rabbit hole I will want to go all in and have a dedicated go fast rig. On this current one, it's a blend.

@desertjunkie760 I hear you, my definition of gofast is how fast I can go now. I haven't gone faster so hard to say but id like to mash and have a smoother ride doing so. It won't be a full-on pre-runner

I have a wedge not GFC. At this point having a rear that could keep up although with some limitations likely in up travel. If I find that the up travel is too limited then that could change. if I had done it differently I may have went similar to @Airdog and did a 16" DMZ kit but not ready to rip out the current stuff but could go with 14" if its worth it and re-do the mounts.

How limiting would a Deaver pack and 12" setup be with a +2 setup? Questions were sparked by 12" not being enough for a +2 but more standard length mid travel.

For what it’s worth I ended up going with JD +2.25 and Archive relocate and HH with 12” smoothies. I don’t think the rear is the best set up available, but I think it’s the best set up for what I use the truck for, at least for what’s currently out there. I need to use it as a truck/workhorse and haul stuff.

No one goes fast down here unless they’re an asshole. You might hit 35 on a straight stretch of forest road, but the visibility is so low it’s irresponsible to go any faster. You’ll kill a hiker/biker. So my needs are probably different than wide open desert wheeling- less demand for the rear keeping up with the front.

The difference between 12" and 14" shocks on an SOA with relocation is all in down travel. You don't gain any up travel either way without substantial work.

Makes sense the up travel is what's killing me for any big improvement than it seems. I could consider spring under if it works with a heavier truck. That and clearance were prob the biggest reasons I thought i could not run it.
