How far below E can you go?

I guess that’s a good way to suck up any dirt from the gas tank that may have gotten in from the gas distributor. I don’t even go to a station that has a fuel truck dumping in new fuel as it stirs up any contamination. 1/4 tank means time to fill up. My brother us to call me a lot when he ran out of gas. I told him E does NOT mean enough. Lol.

 

Depends on if you are going uphill or downhill. I could make it from Chirico Summit to the Indio Ca, Loves, about 30 miles, on 1/2 gallon of gas.

 

I seem to have around 10L when the orange light comes on. That’s based on extrapolation and correction I do from the Ultraguage I have. The ultraguage usually reads 4L higher in the tank than it should since it’s doing estimations based on fuel rate. In any case Toyota made the tank to be exactly 80.0L in capacity and exactly 10L left would be a sensible number.

 

I used to drive my car everywhere with ZERO antifreeze/water. That thing was a champ!

 

I'm not sure it is a good idea to run the tank empty as the fuel pump is probably cooled by the gas left in the tank. Plus I doubt it is good for a fuel pump to pump air instead of fuel when it runs out.

 

But why? What’s the point?

IMO fuel should never be below a quarter.

What if there is a zombie apocalypse and you got no fuel, sucks to be you...

 

Not really the case nowadays. There will be always fuel cooling the pump even if the tank is completely empty.

 

From a pump wear point of view, do not run out of fuel. It’s like running an engine without oil. The fuel lubricates the pump bearings and seals. I’m not a believer in never going below a quarter. I just know where I have to go before filling up. Rarely does the fuel light come on but I will let it get close.

 

When I used to run the Tacoma for work, I would have to fill up twice a week, so I let it get low all the time, never ran out, but ran a lot of miles with that light on....

 

Once in Wyoming I trusted the gas indicator that said I had X-amount of miles left before running out of fuel. We ran out of gas a few miles out of Gillette (it's french for "shit hole") when it was 12degrees outside. Had to call for help, wait for gas. It was cold as shit! Never again! I always keep plenty of gas in and remember, Kramer was kind of an idiot.

 

80% of my fill ups are well past the "0" threshold. I've refilled nearly 21 gallons.

102k miles when my fuel pump was replaced this week for TSB.
