I feel like we will eventually see a Ranger Raptor here that would fill that niche.

Very interesting, so it could officially be a "2022"? That may help resale?

I mean ever so slightly, still same gen and no real changes and your mileage plays a decent factor. But you can say hey it's a 2022. My 17 I bought in October was supposed to be a 2016 when I ordered it.

Right, I get it what you mean. But something about waiting 6 months for a truck being changed to a 2022 still feels better.

I dunno, I think 4th gen might struggle to compete with the new 3rd gen frontier if they aren’t making engine upgrades

If Nissan keeps their reliability reputation plus that engine plus that new exterior look and (ugly in my opinion but other people like it) interior, 4th gen Tacoma is gonna have tough competition

The new frontier is basically the current gen tacoma. It's painfully obvious, I'm actually shocked no one is getting sued for copyright infringement

Yup. There’s lots of sarcastic “nice job on the Nissan Tacoma!” comments on the YouTube vids of it

2022 Lexus NX just revealed. New 2.4 Turbo. It’s widely believed that this engine will replace the GR series V6 seen in the Tacoma and many other products. Would not be surprised to see it standard on the 2024 Tacoma.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but was the Sienna not powered by the 2GR from 2010-2020??

I legally cannot comment on that. More free to discuss Toyota, as no NDAs.

Is that July 22, 2021? All of a sudden, I now no longer can see Build Out dates for MY 2021 Toyota vehicles. Last time I saw it, it said 5/28 or 5/29/2021. This was definitely on the day the 2022 Tacoma embargo ended last week, so after production "ended". The list was recently updated and has omitted this info. I didn't save it unfortunately, to reconfirm it for you.

Typically Toyota switches MY production the next business day, so it seemed odd that production for 2021s ended 2 weeks ago, yet Job 1 for 2022s is August 2. Or is it July 22nd for SOP and line-off (first fully assembled unit) on August 2, 2021?

Toyota is going to knock it out, with what they've got planned. They don't need to worry about the 4G being competitive, but they need to worry about the staying power of the incumbent Generation 3 truck. The last update was 2020 and first MY was 2016 on September 10, 2015. They better hope it doesn't grow stale in 2 years, as it probably won't be 2024 model year thanks to unforeseen delays. Let's see if the same truck can last through late 2024.

This is it. 2.4 Turbo has been talked about for years like TNGA-F (which debuted June 9), even before the new NX 350 came up as a topic of discussion. In fact, some of you on TW mentioned it in an OVTune thread a year ago. I had said a few months ago, that the NX 350 probably has the new engine in it. Now it's here. Turn it into a hybrid (like LS 500 V35A-FTS) and you got the next Taco engine, which has delayed the next set of midsizers for over a year. They are no longer 2023 models, as seen in an official presentation 16 months ago.

Next Land Cruiser Prado 180 is the lead vehicle, which has been delayed into 2024 as well. Although I can still see MY 2024 for the Tacoma (non-Toyota industry access database), I no longer trust it due to these new developments and needing to hear directly from TMC. Unless Toyota has done a switcheroo and made the Tacoma the lead vehicle in the Fall of 2023 instead, with 4Runner and Prado coming afterward in spring 2024.

Unfortunately, Toyota is 99% likely to have pushed out the next Tacoma into Q4 2024 = 2025 MY.

Each time I have said 2024MY in 2023, I did mention unforeseen delays due to development hiccups are always a potential factor. The new I4 hybrid turbo, similar to Tundra's new offshoot of V35A-FTS, is being developed to accommodate full EV mode and that has setbacks for the next 4Runner and Prado.

If they cannot manage retooling TMMGT for 2 new redesigns at once in 2023, then one of them has to be pushed back into the second half of 2024. 4Runner is coming to Mexico as a lot of you suggested and I unwisely ignored/dismissed.

    Not the 2GR-FKS. 2GR-FE until 2016.

If it helps, my SO owns a Gladiator Rubicon 6MT, as a T6 engineer who works on U704, U725, and P703. Look those up and it will answer some stuff.;) Any Ford product that has not been announced officially, I won't talk about in any capacity anywhere.

I am told build date is 7/22/2021. Some seem to believe that they will call it a 2022, which would be nice.

The 2017 Frontier I just turned in to our fleet agent was a shitbox. When I handed it off, it had 105k miles and I don't think there was a trim piece on it that didn't rattle. All the door seals leaked, and the access doors to the backseat let rain in from day one. An issue that Nissan refused to fix or even acknowledge.

The 2021 Frontier I'm sitting in now rattles. It has 1700 miles on it, sounds like it has 70,000, and it has that same crappy interior. People talk shit about the Tacoma's interior being low quality, but Nissan's is another notch below that. I'd rate this brand new Frontier's interior as on par with the 2000 Tacoma I got rid of back in April. There's no part of this interior that I would rank as equal or comparable to my 21 Tacoma's. I just laugh when I read about people who complain about the sound system. Nissan's is garbage. And the gas mileage is shit. I'm averaging 12-15 mpg highway/gravel miles, with a camper shell.

Side by Side, there's no way I'd ever choose a Frontier over a Tacoma. Any trim level of Frontier, any equivalent trim of Tacoma, I'd pick the Tacoma.

To be fair, FCA/Stellantis doesn't have any mid-size or small pickup in the US market while Ford now has one of each.

My father in law has a 2008 Frontier and I rented a 2019 in Colorado and drove that about 1500 miles while it already had about 30k on it. I completely agree about the interior, but what do you expect from a truck that they've been selling since 2004 with little to no updates? Completely disagree about the mileage though. These trucks can get into the 20's pretty easily and I believe I got 18-20 during my entire trip which included going from Denver to Moab over the course of several days.

However, at the end of vacation I was definitely excited to get back to my Tacoma.
