Reverse wire

I have a 2017 TRD Sport SB 4 Dr 4x4 with automatic. I’m trying to install auxiliary lights for backup and camping, and want to hook them into the reverse lights. Is there a reverse light wire in the driver’s kick panel?

And this is worth a bump to, as my '18 needed this wiring location to relocate the reverse camera wire to a new stereo, the harness behind the radio lacked the connection. Go figure

Did you buy a "metra" harness or something similar? They will have a pigtail for that.

 

they do include an extra spare wire with the kit for the purpose, but leave it up to me to figure out where it goes. how nice of them.

i stared at that connector and google for 30 minutes, and then volt-tested the other wires in that harness just to make sure that toyota didn't spaz out and put the reverse wire in a different location for some reason. it didn't make a wire appear in pin #2. should i have tried for 45 minutes?

 

i did get it added in from the harness connection in the drivers kick panel. like i said, i probed all the wires in the harness with a volt meter, just in case, and nothing went hot with the truck on, and putting it in reverse. in fact, nothing in that connector had a voltage signal over 3v.

my connector only had wires in positions 3, 4, 13, 14, 27, 28. 3,4 aren't necessary for my needs, 14/28 is composite video, and 13/27 is the 6v camera power.

i'll try to remember to post a pic later next time i have my dash opened up, but for now everything works as it should, just took more effort than i anticipated.

 

This connection didn’t work for me on my ‘22. Wire was the same color but it didn’t show voltage when going into reverse. What I ended up doing was filing down a paper clip, attaching it to my multi meter and hitting every hole on the wire harness while in reverse until I saw 12v and then taking it out of reverse to make sure it dropped. Once I found the right one I spliced into the factory harness with a butt plug and some heat shrink.

I also had a thought that maybe a 6 speed has a different location than the auto? Either way I’m happy everything is working for me now. Posting here in case anybody else runs into this issue because this thread kept popping up in my searches.

 

Because it changed, OP is not a '22.

P.S. The numbers are looking INTO the connector not from the wire side. And when you test the circuits on the connectors, it's done from the wire side NOT from the terminals side.

Stop using butt plugs...

 

They have a solder core and heat shrink around them. Been using them for as long as I can remember and never had an issue

 

Thank you Lunar Roller! It worked. I have a 2022 as well and I was about to start probing around. I been looking for some info for days and the day I was about to start looking for the reverse wire I stumbled upon your post. It’s working perfect, Thank God. I noticed the older years the reverse wire was in a different location

 

but you never said what color wire nor what pin for the '22. lol
