New engine for new Tacoma

Just saw the engine for the new nx350 this is coming out. I’m getting the feeling this engine will be used in the next Tacoma maybe the next 4Runner. Something similar to the engine in the Ford ranger
What do you think ?

Isn’t the general consensus that the Tacoma will be getting a turbo 4 cylinder next generation? Why is this one out of the realm of possibility?

Exactly the way I have been thinking. Hell the tundra is moving from a V8 to a V6 3.5 turbo. I see the Tacoma and 4Runner going the same direction

 

4 cylinder turbo or hybrid assist is definitely coming.

That said it will run on regular grade fuel and make less power than its lexus counterpart.

Toyota likes to share parts.

 

Thats pretty much what is happening, the kicker is going to be, if the turbo 6 in the tundra will be an option for the Tacoma, I am going to say 50/50 there will be a special model that the 6 is available (maybe the pro). but the standard is going to be a turbo 4. There is a chart floating around from Toyota that basically says as much.

 

Exactly. I’m almost certain the engine will be a variant of the above 2.4 turbo that the nx is getting. Numbers don’t look bad 275 hp and 317 torque. Very similar to what the ranger gets from the 2.3 turbo

 

The 3rd gen still has another what five years left in the platform. I can't see Toyota deciding to do much of anything with it besides a few minor updates here and there. It sells well enough for them not to invest any more time into the platform vs. investing the time in the 4th gen.

 

Doubt very much toyota will have the 3rd gen for 5 more years. They expect to have everything moved to the new TNGA-F platform which tundra 4runner and Tacoma will share by 2024

 

Toyota moves slow, i wouldn't be surprised if the Tundra gets the update and the Tacoma sticks it out another two years into 2026-7. We see this every year and month in the 3rd gen section, speculation on a new engine. The masses have spoken the truck sells well enough to leave it alone. Why re-tool the line and change parts early?

The only thing that might press Toyota into moving quicker is a sales drop, but i'm guessing if that happens the economy will have soured.

 

They can't be caught flat-footed like they were on the Tundra. Toyota needs to update and significantly improve the Tacoma in 2024 to stay ahead of the competition, particularly Ford.

 

I think this, or something close to it, will be the engine. The TRD-Pro will probably get the Turbo-i4 and hybridization, which should then find its way to the other trims in Year 2. I think a lot of guys will hold onto their V6 Tacomas until the kinks get worked out.

 

New Tundra is coming this fall isn't it as a '22MY? 2 years after that would be 2023 as a '24MY. Making the 3rd gen an 8 year run. OR have I misunderstood something.

Generational runs of 9 and 10 years for the previous Taco's doesn't make 8 for the 3rd gen seem exactly fast.

 

I personally don’t think the pro will have anything different as far as the powertrain goes. It seems as a general rule they really have very few powertrain options per model.

 

Yeah, the new Tundra will be out this fall. I would think MY25 would be absolute latest for the 4th gen and that would only be if we had something like this pandemic again. The consensus seems to be that it’ll be MY24. It’s not like it was with the 2nd gen with only the Frontier as competition. You’ve got the Ranger, Frontier, Gladiator, and the GM twins now. The segment is much more competitive now and I’m sure Toyota is aware.

Edit: Forgot about the Ridgeline. So much for Honda’s marketing.

V6 3.5 V6 3.5 single turbo. 3.5 twin turbo. 2.7.

 

Toyota would never knowingly create competition for themselves like that. They want all of their models to sell, they don’t want any models to undercut others
