Garage Shop: Tools

Thoriated , lanthanum, cerium, yttrium and zirconium are all radioactive. My 3 minutes of googling showed websites saying the latter are safer than thoriated, but they don't say safe. Reality is you'll probably be fine, I just see it as a good habit to form to prevent internal radiation exposure. Life's complicated enough without lung cancer.

 

I was in Europe when Chernobyl melted down. Wash down was a pain in the ass. I now have a third nipple. Be safe with that tungsten.

Hello all , I posted this in another place also and I am not sure if this is the place to ask but , are there people here that can take a sample part (gear with some teeth missing ) and scan it , and print it in plastic for me ? Maybe print it in metal ?
My wife has several out dated knitting machines from Passat and parts are VERY hard to come by if at all . The gear is less than 1.5x1.5x1.5 inches . Thanks .

Hello , My wife found a place to buy the gear ( auxiliary wheel ) for the Passap Electronic 6000 . Hopefully they really have it . For some reason she stripped the teeth off and does not know why and I hope she finds out before all the gears are gone lol. They stopped making these machines 10 or 20 ? years ago .

Id personally go for 6 ton jack stands. Not necessarily for the weight rating, but more for the wider and taller base. The sketchy factor on jack stands increases exponentially with every notch up, so something that starts will a taller base won't have to extend the arm as much. I've got ones from Northern Tool that have an additional lock pin to engage a second tooth, which I like.

For the floor jack, I'd look at the HF Pittsburgh jacks. No complaints with my red Pittsburgh LP jack. Although the Daytona jacks are awesome, the Pittsburgh jacks aren't too shabby either and can save some cash. Those trolley jacks as you linked are typically slow and can't support much weight

So for about $60 for the jack stands and $100-120 for the jack (regular vs LP), you can have a lot safer and productive setup for only $50 more spent.

I picked up the

$100 Noco GB40 : 1000A UltraSafe Jump Starter – 12V Lithium Battery Booster Pack, Portable Jump Box, Power Bank & Jumper Cables - for 6.0L Gas and 3.0L Diesel Engines

Noco GB40 for $63 yesterday. Left my truck sitting for a week, started it up just to turn the steering wheel straight then turned right back off, then bled the brakes with engine off using 4runner's electronic booster. All this killed my battery, and if I didn't have a buddy around, then I woulda been stuck. Also on the hunt for a battery to potentially replace since killing it is never good for em too lol
