ha figured as much. Worth an ask but figured that would be the answer. Would be an adventure to build it myself. Just picked up a welder but prob not quite there yet.

But I am stubborn and like to learn and do things myself so def a goal to work up to.

Either way thanks for the ideas/feedback.

What makes your truck 1000 lbs over - it sounds like basically an overlanding or chase truck but neither of which really seem like go fast speeds are part of the equation.

who knows prob a bunch of steel in the bumpers, skids. I do have a wedge camper set up (not bed itself is empty unless its on a trip) now but it was super heavy before and it was a bit of a shocker to see how much it weighed close to 7k. It's mutated many times. So looking into the next iteration.

What do you want to do with your truck - I bet a bunch of guys with similar setups and a custom SOA with nicely tuned shocks could make some bigger bumps seem small, but even with links I don’t think you’ll have the right vehicle layout if you don’t make a full custom back half.

yah that makes sense. This truck won't be a full one LT/Pre Runner. This one is more for taking it wherever. When I hit the desert I like to mash so if it was just hitting it hard for what it is then that works. I would like to build a dedicated go-fast truck to keep it light and fast but that's def not this truck but it does need a diet either way.

Call this a mixed back of tricks truck not pre-runner, not expo but something in between. The rear needs more work ill prob go with SOA, add more bracing and I def need a stronger rear end no matter which way I go.

    Whole lotta stuff
If your truck is a mixed bag of tricks, trying to do a little of this and a little of that, it's going to wind up not being able to perform well at either of those functions/expectations. My advice would be to stay SOA since it's so heavy. Put your money into a getting your SOA system tuned (quality HD leafs, 12 inch smoothies or a 2-tube bypass, and hydros all working smoothly throughout the cycle) and that'll be the best bang for your buck since you haven't committed to another system.

Otherwise if you think you need links, go links, don't dance around it. But keep in mind links are going to outperform a 2+ kit unless you have a bypass and some magic sauce tuning. There was quicksand 2nd gen on here awhile ago, sytfu510 or something like that was the username. He had an expo build with links and 16" or 18" coilovers through the bed, but he was also running a dirt designs 4.5" kit up front.

I don't know if I was the last guy to do it, but that was my experience too. You need wider leaf to handle the weight, a Raptor Spring Under conversion would be perfect.

    Which apparently SDHQ sells.

    Mods? Yes, oh yes..
@nudavinci64 for the love of all things... do not 3link. It's messed up. ask @Evenflow, who needs a 4link. He still working his way through the steps of grief (denial). 3 link can work but the more travel the more that axle moves sideways at full droop and being heavy.... recipe for disaster. You need a 4 link and custom back half.

That dirt designs kit is known to work very well. And @DMCtacoma worked amazing. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/toyotally-awesome-08-tacoma.328604/

I like to think it wasn’t too much money. But it ain’t cheap either.

@Georgeth1022 I really started this phase of the build in July of 2017 and just “finished” it yesterday with a fresh shock rebuild. So almost 4 years of building and changing things (I’ve been saying only 3yrs since the video blew up, but just checked my pics and oops it’s 4). But it’s just constant work really. Build it, drive it, see what works and what you think can be improved and how it can be improved. Try it, revalve things, drive it, see how things work now. Repeat for 2 years, realize you’re going too fast now, build cage, tune for extra weight, cut out everything for bigger tires. Drive it, revalve, redesign 1/3 of the suspension, and tune.

And I think that’s the short version of my last 4 years building it

Edit: and have a wife, gf, or whatever significant other you choose that understands the effort it takes for you to make the truck ride better so she is more comfortable and doesn’t spill her drink. Or be single

Yeah Jeff was always cool with me trying to give me a good deal on the work I was thinking about, but Steve’s work is on a whole other level.

I’d strongly consider a used raptor or F150 to handle more weight and have the power to move it.
