What Have You Done To Your 2nd Gen Tacoma Today?

While I had the skid plates off doing maintenance, I went ahead and gave the engine bay and where the underside doesn’t get to see the sun a quick wash with some degreaser. I also replaced the serpentine belt while I had easy access. The original one (I’m assuming) hardly showed any signs of wear with 130k but good piece of mind to have a new one. Toyota oem parts are some of the strongest/longest lasting parts I have come across while working on all sorts of vehicles.




I tracked down my exhaust system rattle to this heat shield with a missing bolt/nut. Secured it with a hose clamp for now and has appeared to do the trick. I will probably just let this ride, as is.



Mounted an ammo can to store some recovery gear in, so that I can free up some space in the cab toolboxes.



Removed the Cali-Raised side shooter pods in prep for the long awaited Baja designs s1’s. Also got some of the flush mounted S1’s for the rear bumper.

 

I had new wheels and tires installed on Monday along with new tpms sensors. They worked fine until yesterday when the sensor light came on. The tire place checked them out and there were no issues, but the light wouldn't go out. My wife found a thread on Tacomaworld with instructions to reset the tpms system. So far the light has not come back on. I hope it stays that way.

 

Replaced my driver's side CV axle.

I replaced the PS CV axle (as seen in my quoted post) after it failed while wheeling a little while back. Turns out both my PS and DS CV axles were non-OEM (and upon inspection, had some questionable dimensions... which could have explained the failure). So I decided to replace the DS axle as well to prevent a similar failure on that side.

The DS stub shaft REALLY, REALLY did not want to come out of the diff. The PS came out fairly easily. The DS took about two hours just to get the stub shaft out and broke my damn crow bar while trying. Finally got it out, but jesus it was a huge pain in the ass. Fun stuff.

For future reference, I ended up getting some 3mm diameter 900ib strength rope from Amazon to pull these out. Good to have for the trail as well and takes up no room. Tie one side off to the back of the cv on the diff side then tie the other end off to a sledge hammer. Hold the axle straight then swing outwards and it pops out with a couple swings of the hammer.

 

That's a good call. I tried to use that method with some 1/16th braided steel cable (stainless, 370lb breaking strength)... Snapped the damn cable on the 3rd or 4th swing. Definitely need a larger diameter for next time.

In the end I got it out with a chisel, a BFH, and some well placed blows on the ridges on the stub shaft tulip cup.

I got a few kits of this from Amazon. It broke on the driver side but didn’t on the passenger side. I believe it was due to the dust shield cutting into it. But overall worked awesome.

Holy moly that auxiliary fuse panel is not fun, definitely don't want to do that again. Figuring out how to mount relays was a nightmare. But it's done, engine bay wiring all cleaned up, added a couple more noise makers while I was at it, and wired in my rear lights on its own switch instead of automatically with the reverse lights. Running a wiring harness out the driver's side of the engine bay, over the exhaust and frame and fuel tank, was a good way to get real aquainted with the underside of my truck.

Tomorrow is U-Bolt flip kit and bamf front bumper support. Then continuing the wait on ADS

 

Basically a redneck slide hammer. Have to keep that trick in mind.

 

Washed it by hand for the first time ever... Had this truck for almost 5 years! Haha

When I did my needle bearing replacement during my lift my DS axle was the same way. It took me 2-3 hours with different tools and finally it broke loose after using 2 crow bars and using my whole body to push them. When these are seated they are SEATED!

 

Sharp single cab. No gingerbread needed. Well done sir.

 

Went on a long trail run yesterday with a great group of people. My Tacoma impressed me more and more everyday

 

No pics for now, but I had the brakes done Friday at 158k miles. New rotors and pads, serviced calipers. They informed me the rear drums should be fine for another 20k or so.

I legit had a crowbar on each side, a foot on each crowbar. hands on the frame, dead lifting the frame to push the crowbars away. once it gave way the axle shot out like a rocket and drilled me in the chest. I had never been so happy to be hurt.

 

its not really a write up, but the panels pop off really easy. the only thing you need to do is clean well, wipe down with iso, use adhesion promoter, sem paint, sem clear coat.
