Friend of mines dog ran off in a thunderstorm once, never did come back. That was 6 years ago.

Today is the day . Dropping the RAV4 at the body shop . I’m still pissed about that New driver door and rear door skin . Paint the whole side from headlight to tail light. Only 5000 miles on it .

No love for dandelions?

My Dad told me (and I'm not entirely sure he wasn't having me on)...

Dandelions are an indication that:
1) The soil is compacted
2) The soil has insufficient minerals, particularly calcium

Therefore...let them do their thing.
Their deep roots will loosen the soil and bring up calcium.
As the soil improves, they'll get crowded out naturally.

Mind you, my Mom hated dandelions...

Yeah, supposedly they have spread along roads with the help of passing cars bearing along their seeds.
From what I've seen, that seems very likely.
Every Spring I see more Purple Loosestrife along the roads.
Out in farm fields and along fencelines where I shoot groundhogs...not so much (yet).

We called them “piss the beds”.
The French word for dandelion is pissenlit, which translates to "pee the bed." Dandelions are a diuretic and in fact they are as strong as some of the commercial products.
The leaves, the flowers and the roots are edible. A cup of dandelion greens would give you about 112 per cent of your recommended daily amount of vitamin A and 535 per cent of your recommended daily amount of vitamin K, and other things like calcium, iron and magnesium.

 

They are edible for sure, not terrible tasting, a little bitter i would say. I would never eat any from my yard from the amount of spraying the neighbors get done in their yards.

 

Before widely available vitamins, farm folk would make dandelion salad in the early Spring.
By Winter's end, people would often be deficient in vitamins, particularly C (scurvy).
My Grandmother Erla would make dandelion salad.
Her recipe was creamy and very sweet...to cover the bitterness (only partly successful).

I wasn't crazy about it and my Mom despised it.
She said it was worse than "Poke Sallet", as they call it in the South.
Made from pokeweed in early Spring and for the same reasons...
