Well…I upgraded my ‘05 Tacoma Access Cab from the cheap factory unit to an Alpine ilx-W650 with the KTA-450 Amp to power Infinity Reference 9630cx in the front doors with Reference 6532ex in the rear.
A tremendous upgrade from original I am completely satisfied…accept I need a decent subwoofer and after talking to Crutchfield they turned me onto a JL 12W3v3-2 2 ohm version powered with a Rockford R2-500X1 500 watt amp.
I have plenty of room in my access cab.

I listen to hard metal with powerful lows and really would like to complete the sound I have with added bass to officially complete my upgrade.
This speaker gets tons of great reviews I just want to make sure I am making a good decision. I was talked out of the 4 ohm version for my current setup not sure why but I told the guy from crutchfield that I listen to very powerful heavy metal music with powerful lows…Meshuggah is one if anyone is curious…so the 2 ohm version JL W3 seems to be the better match according to crutchfield.
    …again how does this sound?

Also…I was told to get an enclosed box for this speaker any suggestions where I can find a good one online to fit this subwoofer?
    Thanks in advance.

JL is known for really good subs and amps. The 2ohm version will hit harder.

Have you seen the custom box builds that Mr. Marv makes for members on here?
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/general-car-audio-faqs.6856/
You might try reaching out to him or doing a google search for a custom box that matches that sub.

Thanks I’ll look into that and see about getting a decent sealed cabinet made if I decide to go ahead and get this JL.
I realize that this is considered a mid level upgrade from my factory system but honestly to my ears even without a subwoofer it sounds extremely powerful. I’m getting 3 times what I had from factory. Also…the price range for everything was right around my budget. IMO one hell of an upgrade for a little over $2000.00 once a have a subwoofer with a cabinet in …and I have decided to install everything myself saving me tons on this audio upgrade. I still need to go back and sound deadening my doors but I’ll do that later…it can always be done. I think I will be more than happy with this full upgrade once a get a subwoofer in the back for a long time. :)

I still need to research subwoofers…because there are so many options…Crutchfield told me I can grab 2 JL 10’s and put them in the back or what they are really suggesting is one single W3 12” 2 ohm subwoofer. Also…I’m aware of a much pricier 12” W7 but from what I’ve gathered is that will be total overkill for what I have and should not have to spend that kind of money to get a decent 12” subwoofer.
If there is another brand I should be checking out to match my system decently please let me know.
I asked them about Audiofrog and Crutchfield told me yes they are great more expensive but will not work as well as the JL W3 because of my current audio upgrade I have.
So many subwoofers…and I have time to decide.
Thanks again for any suggestions or advice. :)
Once again this is an ‘05 Tacoma Access cab.

Okay talked to Crutchfield again and they highly suggest I get 2 10” JL W3 4 ohm speakers along with a JL JD1000/1 Amp.

    This seems decent.

    Still deciding. :)

Anyone care to chime in here? Crutchfield is guaranteeing me I will be very happy with this setup.
Again…this is going in a second GEN Toyota Access cab. I really would like to get some opinions from some experienced members here.
Now I’m being told that I am going to both hear and FEEL the bass…I was asking about putting 2 12” JL W3 4 ohm speakers in instead of 2 JL 10” 4 ohm W3’s and Crutchfield is telling me that in my second second GEN Tacoma Access cab that would be way overkill especially with my current speaker setup (Infinity Reference 9630cx in front…Reference 6532ex in the rear).
I really want to FEEL the bass and hear them so if 2 JL W3 10’s will get me that then I am happy. Again they are telling me to get the JL JD1000 amp for these Subwoofers.
I realize I will have to get a decent sealed box for these and I know several people that can do this for me…one being “Marv” from this forum.

This seems decent to me but I’ve never had any subwoofers in my truck so what do I know.
So far Crutchfield is guaranteeing me I will love this setup. I still would like to get other experienced members advice on this 2 10” JL W3 4 ohm Subwoofer setup with the JL JD1000 amp decision.
    Thanks again.

Look…I play hard metal…honestly I just want my subs to hit HARD. If 2 JL W3 10” 4 ohm subs powered from a JL JD1000/1 will do the job then that’s all I need to know…this is a GEN 2 Access Cab…or should I spend twice as much and get 2 10” Audiofrog BD10 D4 4 ohm subs instead?

If I can get away with going cheaper with the JL’s to push my music hard then that will put a smile on my face.

    Thanks. :)

i think what you really need to do is figure out how much interior space you're willing to give up or commit to the cause, and where. mr marv might make great boxes, but i don't believe he or any other box builder has discovered how to make tardis boxes yet.

I’m willing to give up my whole access cab. :) Not sure what a Tardis box is.

the tardis is the spaceship from dr who, one of the bbc's longest running tv shows. it's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TARDIS

for 2 12's you're going to need to fit a very large box. if you're that serious about bass to commit most of the interior space, i wouldn't bother with 10's, they're not going to be enough.

Ya know I think I am really overthinking this. 2 10’s JL W3’s i think I’ll be happy.

…and to think…only 2 Months ago I simply just wanted a decent head unit so I could use Bluetooth, lol

    What have I become!!!

Actually I am doing that soon.
Mobile One wants to charge me $1500.00 to do this!!! Screw that I’d rather sweat my ass off in my garage for far cheaper!

Just thinking about it…all this extra money for higher upgrades I could put that money towards a jet ski!!!

Im going to be by the waters with my music cranked while watching all these people having fun on their skis…but at least I’m sitting in my truck with my music bumping!!!

Nah…I’m completely sound deadening my truck for “future proof upgrades” …2 JL W3 10 4ohms…that’s perfect for a first upgrade.

I want a jet ski dammit!!

Well…I noticed some badass audio systems for jet skis!!! It never ends!!!

I swear after this is all over I’m going to need a shrink!

Guys I am not gonna lie…I have not had proper sleep for a Month and a half because of all of this…like right now I just know my front gains are a little too high…and I really should switch my dip switches to 120 hz so I don’t blow my door speakers…but I’m leaving them at 80hz and just pull the gains down until I can get proper bass from Subwoofers and not kill my door speakers as I’m relying on them to get me my bass.

Crutchfield keeps telling me to have fun with all this…my hair is falling out!
But at least I’m learning. :) :insert book image here and some smart logo:

The setup is awesome! …and I still have no subs in yet. I did some sound deadening in the doors and rear and I guess that made a difference but it sounded great before.
I just bought I really nice new battery and I swear everything sounds better, lol…placebo effect I am sure.

I have 2 Audiofrog GB12D4s (yes I chose these over the JL W3’s) and even the box done from Mr. Marv I just need to save up for a decent amp and then my audio upgrading will be done…for a while anyway.
I have an ‘05 Access Cab and once the door speakers broke in they now sound 100 times better…plus I’ve gotten much better at eq’ing.
I just cannot wait to grab a decent Amp for the subs because things are gonna change again quite drastically once I have my subs in.
Good luck with your audio upgrading and try and have fun with it.
