Thank you! Y’all ride safe, too. We just lost a family friend in an accident this week. Keep it rubber side down and ride defensive.

Interstate is boring as all get out! But it gets the job done if you are in a hurry!

Back highways all day long! I love the on-ramps near me but once I'm on the slab, I can't wait to get off... hence my extra-legal speeds while I'm there!

RE: wind protection - Just put a double bubble knock-off on the bike after running with the stock screen for a few months. Truly amazing difference in wind blast and probably the best "mod" for any bike that runs at highway speeds!

a good friend of mine came all too close to this last week. Excellent, experienced rider, with 5 decades of experience. Older dude but still sharp. He’s on week 2 of hospitalization, just moved to a rehab facility, so he’s on the mend.

never let your guard down. Assume no one can see you. I know, I’m preaching to the choir, but it’s good to remember.

For me there are often additional variables that affect my decision. I hate taking toll roads or interstates but if I need to cover big miles to get to the fun stuff and want to have more time in the fun areas I will take the slab and just knock it out. I'll also pick slab for when I know I'll be on a long haul after dark because then I can let a trucker or other large vehicle run rabbit for me so if a deer does decide to cross my biggest issue is likely to be the debris field left from the larger vehicle taking it out rather than me on the bike.

Wind can be brutal when you're on a bike. Sometimes it helps to slow your speed to lessen the effect other times speeding up seems to be the answer. I rode about 60-90 minutes once with a crosswind that I swear felt like I was riding the entire time at a 45 degree angle just to go straight. I finally just had to pull over and walk a round a little as my hips hurt so bad from fighting to stay in control as my knees were gripping the tank so tightly.

So awesome how everything worked out, and happy the SV did well on the trip.

Hopefully we'll all get together again for a ride !

Just as an FYI, I just grabbed 4 sets of ear plugs this morning when I got to work and threw them in a saddlebag to replenish my supply.

True story. I’m sure the ride home got pretty repetitious and boring.

How did the ear plugs work out for you?

So you were the guy I needed ask. I asked the other guys right after you left. Luckily John has some at his house for me to use the next day.
They were a lifesaver! Can’t wait to get a double bubble windscreen.

@FreshOldTaco got the one pair I had in my tankbag pocket. I usually have at least a couple pairs stashed. Going to put some in a ziplock bag under my seat where I have a couple of pairs of Nitrile gloves and some shop rags.

More questions for the peanut gallery …

Service manual doesn’t specify replacing primary oil at 5k….but as I read around before doing the oil change on my bike (first oil service for me on 2 wheels), quite a few discuss replacing the primary oil as well?? What say y’all?

Service schedule for it calls out primary oil change at 10k. Obviously it won't hurt to do it but it's not entirely necessary yet. I would switch to full synthetic oil though when you do the service. It tends to run a little cooler and clutch action seems a little smoother but those are just seat of the pants observations.

Yeah Chuck gave me his last set earlier at lunch, they really help cut down all the noise from the wind and exhaust

My neighbor just inherited a Harley and needed help replacing the charging system. Pretty eye opening for both of us. Those things are tanks and not built remotely like Japanese sport bikes.

Luckily the first day wasn’t a lot of highway. Second day would have been rough if I didn’t have ear plugs. My helmet doesn’t block any wind noise at all.
