His info says he is in Ontario. Canadian salt special, probably never rinsed the underside in 4 years. I would be worried with more than just the springs at this point.

Thanks for most of these responses, I will investigate options recommended here. I am also going to contact a local spring shop to see if they can sort something out.

Re: neglecting my truck, not really sure I'd fully agree. I bought it at one year old from a dealership. All service was done at the dealership. I bought a nice truck, drove it to work and back with not a lot of downtime for pulling off the wheels or doing a lot of anything really. This is my fifth Tacoma and I have never had rust like this before. All got the same treatment - dealership service, driven back and forth to work. I got a recall notice for rust on the frame and took it in for inspection at their request, so there is some manufacturing deficiency there.

It was under warranty for two of my requests to fix a 'clunking sound in the front suspension'. Both times they found nothing wrong. Warranty is now over, and first service after that, they 'found' the broken springs and give me a crazy quote for replacement.

How does the spring on the other side look?
Honestly I think the truck is just slightly more rusty then your usual Tacoma but the spring on the other hand looks like it was made with a recycled Toyota frame from a rust recall. I feel like a email with a few pic to Toyota corporate might help the situation. Good luck!

Never mind I see both sides in post #1. Just get corporate involved if the dealership isn’t willing to help some and explain the fact you had brought it in for clunky suspension prior to the warranty expiring.

It takes only about 5 seconds to peek into your wheel well. Just a glance would notice that rust is completely excessive & will only lead to a “clunky” front suspension noise.

I’d say the suspension is doing a damn good job for you if all you are complaining of is a “clunky noise”.

Photos like this make me appreciate living in south east Texas. Salted roads are not a thing. However, the flip side is, the 105 degree temp yesterday wasn't awesome either.

I'm good with the rain. And I like to think of hurricane season as a little adventure every year. Though to be fair, I've been fortunate and have not had my home destroyed. My perspective may be abruptly changed one day.

    4 run, 2 don't
Seems others don't have the same issue you're having.

You did straight up neglect your truck; rust like that doesn't happen overnight.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I came across this when trying to find how much I should sell my shocks for after replacing them with the Eibach upgrade springs...they are coated with a mixture of phosphating and powder coating to protect against abrasion and corrosion, not cheap plastic. Letting you know in case you're ever on Jeopardy and get asked this question.

Powder coating is the process of coating stuff in plastic, in case it comes up in Trivial Pursuit. So yes they are covered in cheap plastic. ;)

I think that’s understating it unless you can give me an example of expensive thermoset polymer coating or other plastics. Plus, I’m pretty sure they are simply using it to cover the phosphate coating while also preserving the fox red.

For accuracy, powder coating is powdered plastic that is electrostatically attracted to the object, then melted in place. Top quality plastics like say nylon or Delrin, can’t be used in this process, so powder coating is the process of applying cheap plastic to parts. The advantage is it gives a very uniform surface and requires little skill to apply, so parts look very “pro” for the consumer. The disadvantage is powder coat has poor durability in comparison to an item that has been properly painted. In the end, it’s a layer of cheap plastic.

So....the springs are made by Eibach? For a 4 year old Tacoma TRD Pro? The attached screen shot is for a 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro, DCSB. Price for the front springs alone. Hope this helps OP. Screen Shot 2022-02-28 at 7.08.30 AM.jpg

Hey @shesh, how’s your truck doing these days? Ever see a resolution to this?

OP stated he bought it at a year old - curious if there was a ‘history’ with this truck, whether disclosed or not. Something like being involved in a flood/submerged. Did he get a good deal on it? Was it traded in/bought/serviced at the same dealer?
There has to be more to this trucks story then just neglect, in defence of OP.

Wow, news flash, coil springs don't break from rust! You can pull a '36 Buick out of a swamp and all the springs will need is sand blasting and paint. The OP's treatment by Guelph Toyota is classic Evil Dealership behavior. This should be run up the chain to corporate.
